Described in example embodiments herein are techniques for implementing power savings in a wireless local area network (WLAN). In accordance with an example embodiment, a centralized controller can be employed to gather data about network activity and select access points to switch to power save mode. Optionally, the controller may designate certain access points to remain active so as to monitor for clients attempting to access the WLAN. An aspect of an example embodiment is that it allows the controller to configure and manage power consumption based on demands on the overall system. In an example embodiment, techniques for implementing power savings within individual hardware components, such as access points, are disclosed. An aspect of a technique described in an example embodiment is that it provides flexibility to balance power savings and performance.

A banking system includes a plurality of automated banking machines and operates to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records. An application-specific integrated circuit and related network switch are disclosed. The integrated circuit includes switch circuitry for receiving a 802.11 wireless data frame and forwarding it to a predetermined port. Decision circuitry is provided for instructing the switch circuitry to forward the data frame based on the attributes, both 802.3 wired and 802.11 wireless.

The method includes wirelessly receiving at a receiving station a signal transmitted from a transmitting station in a wireless network. The signal includes a network identifier, e.g., MAC address of the transmitting station. The method includes determining one or more RF waveform characteristics of at least a transient part of the received signal, decoding the received signal to determine the network identifier, e.g., MAC address, determining one or more behavior characteristics from the received signal; and using the decoded network identifier, e.g., MAC address and a combination of the one or more waveform characteristics and the one or more behavior characteristics to ascertain whether or not the network identifier, e.g., MAC address is a spoofed identifier, the ascertaining using historical samples of combinations for different network identifiers.

Disclosed herein is a highly reliable management communication path to the CPU of a network device using in-band signaling by periodically servicing the Ethernet MAC, such as during system tick and/or watchdog timer refresh interrupts. The servicing selectively processes frames that are uniquely destined to or originating from a managing device. There are several possible techniques to uniquely identify frames as management frames. For example, one technique to identify a management frame involves the addition of an Ethernet MAC address to be used only for management frames, another technique employs a dedicated VLAN to be used only for management frames, a third technique employs a dedicated Layer 2 frame type for management frames, and another technique involves configuring the Ethernet MAC to operate in promiscuous mode and only process frames sent and received as unicast frames using a fixed source or destination MAC address.
