A first network device determines flow statistics information associated with a flow. The first network device modulates the time-to-live (TTL) header field in a packet associated with the flow to include flow statistics information. The packet includes a header and a payload. The first network device transmits the packet to a second network device. The second network device demodulates the TTL header field to determine flow statistics information.

Field modulation for transfer and measurement of flow statistics

In one embodiment, a router examines an incoming packet for a flow monitoring request. The router may examine every packet for the flow monitoring request, or preferably may only examine packets including a lifetime value indicating that the packet should be dropped and not forwarded or may only examine packets having a predetermined message format. When the flow monitoring request is included, the router performs detailed flow analysis or other monitoring according to the flow monitoring request.

Triggering flow analysis at intermediary devices

A method for alert throttling in media quality monitoring, includes monitoring a plurality of active communication sessions. Each active communication session is between at least two endpoints. The method also includes detecting at least one quality-impacted communication session out of the plurality of active communication sessions. The method also includes generating a first alert for each detected quality-impacted communication session out of the plurality of active communication sessions until a first throttling number of quality-impacted communication sessions is detected out of the plurality of active communication sessions. Upon detecting the first throttling number of quality-impacted communication sessions, the method includes generating a second alert for each group of additional second number of quality-impacted communication sessions detected out of the plurality of active communication sessions.

Method and system for alert throttling in media quality monitoring

An apparatus including a private branch exchange (PBX) switch, a residential gateway to receive channel associated signals (CAS) from the PBX switch, and a programmable CAS module to convert the CAS signals into internet protocol (IP) signals is disclosed.
