A system for transmitting data over a communication network operating in an Ethernet or serial communication mode, where an Ethernet or serial cable is replaced by radios transmitting over an over-the-air radio link. The system includes computer processors that receive the data and assemble that data into smaller OTA data packets for delivery across the link and operating protocols that provide collision avoidance of OTA packets transmitted in an overlapping manner by radios on opposite sides of the over-the-air link. In a preferred mode the system operates in the 902-928 MHz ISM band, and the data being transmitted over distances much greater than for 2.4 GHz transmission.

A test cartridge for use in sample analysis is provided. The test cartridge includes a reservoir card that further includes a reagent that includes living biological cells; and a test cartridge base configured to accept the reservoir card. The reservoir card is configured to interface with a test cartridge base through at least one fluid port. The test cartridge base includes an elliptical reaction chamber having a central axis and an inlet channel connected to the reaction chamber. The inlet channel is positioned above the reaction chamber at an angle of 15-60 degrees above the horizontal and is offset from the central axis of the reaction chamber. Upon introducing a sample to be analyzed into the test cartridge base through the inlet channel, the sample is homogeneously mixed with the reagent while minimizing damage to the living biological cells.

A portable system for real time detection of the presence of an infectious agent in a biological sample employs a reagent which detects the presence of a specific infectious agent in the sample, and emits a detectable signal when the reagent reacts with the sample and detects the presence of the infectious agent. A test cartridge has a reaction chamber for receiving the sample and the reagent. The reaction chamber has a predetermined internal geometry and at least one inner surface. Introducing the sample and the reagent into the test cartridge mixes the sample and the reagent. A testing unit receives the test cartridge, and includes a sensor for detecting an emitted detectable signal. The detection of the emitted detectable signal is indicative of the presence of the infectious agent in the sample.

A battery charger uses an unregulated DC transformer (100) as a power source for charging a battery pack (101) through a pass device (104). A charger controller (150) instantaneously computes a desired charging current value for maximizing the charging efficiency of the battery charger based on the present voltage of the battery pack (101), ambient temperature data received from a thermistor (121), and charging rates and other charging parameters received from a data-storage device (123) in the battery pack. The charger controller sends the calculated desired charging current information to a power controller (103). The power controller (103) monitors the instantaneous power dissipation of the pass device (104) and scales the desired charging current value to prevent excessive power dissipation in the pass device (104). By allowing the charging voltage to vary and dynamically adjusting the charging current, various types of batteries can be recharged without the use of an expensive tracking regulator.

A switching circuit (345) controls the supply of power from the power source output to an energy storage circuit (334). An output (305) of the energy storage circuit has a controlled current in a current regulator mode. The output of the energy storage circuit has a substantially constant voltage in a voltage regulator mode.

The power consumption controller circuitry (200) utilizes a low cost, low power, low frequency oscillator (237) in conjunction with hardware and software for shutting down a portion of the radiotelephone (101) for a sleep period, when the radiotelephone (101) is not receiving information from the remote transceiver (103). The current sleep period is adapted depending upon the timing accuracy of the previous sleep period.
