This disclosure relates to a system for actively controlling shock train in a high speed, air-breathing propulsion engine. The system includes an isolator, a sensor associated with the isolator, and a shock train fuel injector in electrical communication with the sensor. The sensor is configured to sense changes in pressure generated by a shock train in the isolator. The shock train fuel injector is in electrical communication with the sensor. The shock train fuel injector is configured to modulate fuel flow to the engine to control back pressure produced by the engine in response to predetermined pressure changes in the shock train.

Active control of scramjet isolator shock systems

A fuel reformation system includes a fuel delivery system that supports fuel, an oxidizer delivery system that supports an oxidizer, a mixer/vaporizer system in fluid communication with the fuel delivery system and the oxidizer delivery system, and a fuel processing reactor system. The mixer/vaporizer system receives the oxidizer from the oxidizer delivery system and the fuel from the fuel delivery system to mix and vaporize the oxidizer and fuel into a first effluent. The fuel processing reactor system receives the first effluent and reacts with the first effluent to generate a second effluent in the form of hot syngas for selective injection into a high speed, air-breathing propulsion system.

Fuel reformation for use in high speed propulsion systems

A low-emission and environmentally-friendly apparatus and method is used to generate a high-pressure stream of thermal vapor. The thermal vapor stream may be injected into a subsurface petroleum-bearing formation for recovery of highly viscous petroleum or used to turn a steam turbine for driving an electrical generator. In one implementation, the high-pressure stream of thermal vapor is generated by burning a high-temperature fuel, including any short or long chain hydrocarbon products from methane to coal, in an enclosed vessel to produce combustion gases. Various cooling techniques, including regenerative cooling, may be employed to maintain the internal temperature of the vessel below a predefined safe level. The high-pressure thermal vapor stream may then be used to enhance recovery of highly viscous petroleum.

A cooling system for a high-speed vehicle may comprise a combustor wall at least partially enclosing a combustor and which is cooled using a coolant circulating in a Brayton cycle. The heated coolant may be expanded in a turbine, transfer heat to a fuel within a heat exchanger, and be compressed by a compressor before returning to the combustor wall. The combustor wall may be capable of withstanding high temperatures, higher than the temperature at which fuel coking may take place. Heat transfer takes place between the coolant and the combustor wall, and between the coolant and the fuel. A method of cooling an engine for a high-speed vehicle is also disclosed.

A scramjet has a cowl, a center structure, and a plurality of wide pylons connecting the cowl to the center structure, with scramjet engines positioned between adjacent pylons. Leading surfaces of adjacent pylons converge to one another to provide side wall compression to air entering the engines. The center structure includes a fore body, a center body and an aft body that, with the pylons, define a basic structure either formed entirely from one piece or several securely connected pieces. A method of testing the scramjet projectile comprises using a gun to accelerate the scramjet projectile to the takeover velocity of the engines.
