The vehicle brake with brake cylinder bore insert (30, 130) comprises a cast disc brake cylinder (12, 112) which includes a bore (14, 114) into which the bore insert (30, 130) may be disposed. The bore (14, 114) may have an opening (22, 118) at either one (20, 120) of the opposite axial ends for inserting the bore insert (30, 130). The insert has lock ribs (34) disposed about the perimeter (32) thereof, and at opposite axial ends a pair of perimeter extensions or crush ribs (36) which tightly engage the surface (21, 121) of the bore (14, 114) when the insert (30, 130) is disposed within the bore (14, 114). The insert (30, 130) has opposite flat sides (50) which permit an adhesive material to be disposed between the lock ribs (34) and the surface (21, 121) of the bore (14) in order to fix the insert (30) within the bore (14). The insert (30, 130) contains a central opening (39, 139) which may be of different diameters or shapes for receiving a piston (40) and seals disposed about the piston (40).

The adaptive braking system (10) default activated proportioning valve (80, 80A, 80B) comprises a proportioning valve that is deactivated during normal and adaptive braking system operation. Should the adaptive braking system (10) experience a failure so that the related wheel or wheels (49, 59) of the vehicle no longer receive an appropriate braking pressure from a pressure producing mechanism (12) of the vehicle, the proportioning valve (80, 80A, 80B) is activated by the electronic control unit (70) of the adaptive braking system (10) so that the braking pressure is proportioned accordingly. The valve contains a fusible link that is disipated to allow the valve to proportion.

The present invention comprises an integrated disc brake (50) and drum brake (120) construction. A support member (12) is supported by a vehicle axle (14) and extends radially outwardly to provide support for a housing (52) of the disc brake (50). The housing (52) is secured by bolts (93 or 94) to the support member (12), the housing (52) having through openings (54) for receiving rod members (75). The rod members (75) each have one end (76) secured to the support member (12) and a second part (90) and the other end has an opening (77) for an internal bore (78) extending therein. The disc brake (50) includes an axially movable yoke (60) attached to guide pins (82) extending into bores (78) of the rods (75) for slidable movement therein. The second part (90) extends radially to provide support for an inner brake pad (20) and may extend axially away from the housing (52) to provide an anchor support (91) for shoulders (132, 142) of drum brake shoes (130, 140). The support member (12) supports a mechanical actuator (121) which may be operated to bias the drum brake shoes (130, 140) into engagement with a drum portion (42) of the brake disc (40) in order to effect a parking brake operation.

The adaptive braking system (10) default activated proportioning valve (80, 80A, 80B) comprises a proportioning valve that is deactivated during normal and adaptive braking system operation. Should the adaptive braking system (10) experience a failure so that the related wheel or wheels (49, 59) of the vehicle no longer receive an appropriate braking pressure from a pressure producing mechanism (12) of the vehicle, the proportioning valve (80, 80A, 80B) is activated by the electronic control unit (70) of the adaptive braking system (10) so that the braking pressure is proportioned accordingly.

The retainer assembly (10) comprises a longitudinally extending retainer body (12) having an enlarged diameter or head member (14) at one end and an arrow-shaped or flared member (16) at the other end. A V-shaped leaf spring (20) has an opening (24) at the bottom of the V-shaped opening (22) which receives the retainer body (12) so that the spring (20) is disposed between the head member (14) and a surface (31) of a first member (30). The retainer body (12) extends through an opening (32) in the first member (30) and the flared member (16) is resiliently captured within a resilient receiving member (50) disposed within an opening (46) of the second member (40). The opening (46) in the second member (40) is in a second surface (44) disposed apart from a first surface (42) of the second member (40) which engages the first member (30). The receiving member (50) flexibly traps the flared member (16) after insertion therethrough so that the leaf spring (20) biases the first member (30) into engagement with the second member (40).

Integrated disc brake and drum rake construction

The brake assembly (10, 110, 210) comprises a caliper housing (14, 114, 214) having a bore (26, 226) with a first piston (30, 230) slidably received therein. The first piston (30, 230) includes a recess (34, 234) receiving the head (52, 252) of a longitudinally extending rod (50, 250), the head (52) displaced from a surface (35) of the recess (34) by a resilient mechanism (37). The piston (30, 230) has a first seal (40, 240) disposed thereabout. The longitudinally extending rod (50) has an end (54) with a second seal (60) disposed thereabout, the end (54) received slidably within a tube (70) having a flange (72). The flange (72) of the tube (70) has a first spring (80, 180) located thereabout, the first spring (80, 180) biasing tube (70) away from a second piston (90) positioned about the tube (70) and rod (50 ). A retainer (110) is mounted fixedly within the bore (26) and extends longitudinally within an enlarged opening portion (32) of the first piston (30) to provide an abutment for a second spring (100) which biases the second piston (90) away from the first piston (30). The brake assembly (10, 110) provides the combination of an automatic pressure compensated adjustment, positive piston retraction, and piston knock-back control. Alternatively, the brake assembly (210) may include positive piston retraction and piston knock-back control by having a second rod (270) received within an opening (254) of the first rod (250), the resilient mechanism (237) located between the flange (272) and a caliper housing wall (245), and a spring (280) for piston retraction disposed between the flange (272) and an extension (219) of the caliper housing (214).
