Medical devices such as medical containers can be formed of glass and annealed which produces a clean device having a low bio-burden, or formed by plastic molding which produces a clean device. The clean devices are immediately transferred to a controlled environment such as a clean room or localized area to avoid the need to maintain cleanliness levels in an entire room. Syringe tip closures can be introduced into the housing assembly, where syringe barrels and tip closures are cleaned with filtered ionized air and the tip closures are coupled to the barrels. The syringe barrels can be filled with a substance and a closure member attached. While still in the housing assembly the syringe barrels can be formed into an array and placed in a clean outer container, which is then closed and sealed.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing, filling and packaging medical devices and medical containers

Syringe assemblies having a passive disabling system to prevent reuse are provided. According to one or more embodiments, the syringe assembly comprises a barrel, plunger rod and stopper wherein the plunger rod further comprises a flexible protrusion that locks the plunger rod within the barrel. Certain embodiments further include a frangible portion on the plunger rod that breaks when reuse is attempted.

Syringe with disabling mechanism

A syringe assembly includes a syringe barrel having an inside surface defining a chamber, an open proximal end, a distal end, and an outlet; a plunger assembly disposed at least partially within the syringe barrel, including an elongate plunger rod having a locking flange formed thereon; and a plunger head having a distal sealing surface, the plunger rod being engageable with the plunger head such that the plunger rod is adapted to move the plunger head within the chamber of the syringe barrel through an injection cycle; and a flange lock disposed at the open proximal end of the barrel. The flange lock is integral with the open proximal end of the syringe barrel. During the injection cycle, the flange lock engages the locking flange of the plunger rod so as to prevent removal of the plunger rod from the syringe barrel.

Passive reuse prevention syringe that uses a flange lock

A syringe assembly comprises a syringe barrel having an elongated body defining a chamber for retaining fluid, an open proximal end, a distal end and a frusto-conically shaped tip extending from the distal end and having a passageway therethrough in fluid communication with the chamber. The chamber has an inside diameter of at least 13.5 mm. A stopper is in fluid-tight engagement inside the barrel. An elongated plunger rod extends proximally from the stopper through the open proximal end of the barrel. A flange is positioned at the proximal end of the plunger rod. The flange is shaped and positioned to limit the distal motion of the plunger rod in the barrel by contacting the proximal end of the barrel. A tip cap is releasably connected to the tip for sealing the passageway and the chamber contains injectable liquid.

Syringe assembly

A syringe assembly includes a syringe barrel having an inside surface defining a chamber and an outlet. A plunger assembly is disposed within the syringe barrel and includes an elongate plunger rod having a distal end surface, a plunger head having a distal sealing surface and a proximal end surface having a continuous perimeter, and a breakable neck portion integrally connecting the plunger rod and the plunger head. A retaining ring lock is disposed on the inside surface of the barrel and defines an engagement surface about a perimeter of the chamber. The retaining ring lock is adapted to engage and retain the plunger head in a locked position within the chamber. The engagement surface of the retaining ring lock engages the continuous perimeter of the proximal end surface of the plunger head in a perimetrical engagement when the plunger head is in the locked position.

Passive reuse prevention syringe that uses a retaining ring lock

Various embodiments of syringe assemblies include a syringe barrel and a substantially conical tip or outlet disposed on the distal end of the barrel. The substantially conical tip includes a locking mechanism that engages an extension of a plunger assembly extending from a distal end of the plunger assembly so as to retain the extension within the substantially conical tip or outlet upon full injection of the contents of the syringe to a patient. According to one embodiment, a plunger head of the plunger assembly is slidably disposed on the extension. According to another embodiment, a separate hub, which holds a needle cannula, is disposed on an outlet at the distal end of the syringe barrel, which contains the locking mechanism. According to a further embodiment, the locking mechanism includes a locking clip disposed within the substantially conical tip of the syringe assembly.

Syringe assemblies having a passive disabling system to prevent reuse are provided. Syringe assemblies of one or more embodiments also include visual indicators or markers indicating whether a syringe assembly is used or the plunger rod is locked within the barrel.

Syringe assemblies having a passive disabling system to prevent reuse are provided. In one embodiment, the passive disabling system activates after completion of an injection cycle. An exemplary syringe assembly incorporates a stopper and plunger rod attached in a manner to prevent users from disassembling the syringe prior to completion of the injection cycle. The barrel may also include an annular extension or collar that extends from the proximal end of the barrel. In a specific configuration, the annular extension at least partially envelopes a portion of the thumb press to prevent the user from accessing the thumb press and moving the plunger rod in a proximal direction Syringe assemblies of one or more embodiments also include visual indicators or markers indicating whether a syringe assembly is used or the plunger rod is locked within the barrel.

A syringe assembly having passive disabling structure includes a barrel and a plunger rod assembly. The plunger rod assembly includes a plunger rod and a stopper connected by an indexing locking element. The number of strokes of the syringe plunger before the stopper is locked into the barrel rendering the syringe assembly unusable is determined by the number of detents on the plunger rod and stopper which engage the locking mechanism. Upon completion of the final delivery stroke, any attempt to withdraw the plunger rod from the barrel will cause the locking element to engage the barrel and trap the stopper in the barrel preventing further use of the syringe.
