Hydrocarbon feedstocks are converted into synthesis gas in a two-stage process comprising an initial steam reforming step followed by final conversion to synthesis gas in a mixed conducting membrane reactor. The steam reforming step converts a portion of the methane into synthesis gas and converts essentially all of the hydrocarbons heavier than methane into methane, hydrogen, and carbon oxides. The steam reforming step produces an intermediate feed stream containing methane, hydrogen, carbon oxides, and steam which can be processed without operating problems in a mixed conducting membrane reactor. The steam reforming and mixed conducting membrane reactors can be heat-integrated for maximum operating efficiency and produce synthesis gas with compositions suitable for a variety of final products.

Production of synthesis gas by mixed conducting membranes

An oxygenated organic liquid product and a fuel gas are produced from a portion of synthesis gas comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and sulfur-containing compounds in a integrated feed treatment and catalytic reaction system. To prevent catalyst poisoning, the sulfur-containing compounds in the reactor feed are absorbed in a liquid comprising the reactor product, and the resulting sulfur-containing liquid is regenerated by stripping with untreated synthesis gas from the reactor. Stripping offgas is combined with the remaining synthesis gas to provide a fuel gas product. A portion of the regenerated liquid is used as makeup to the absorber and the remainder is withdrawn as a liquid product. The method is particularly useful for integration with a combined cycle coal gasification system utilizing a gas turbine for electric power generation.

This invention relates to a continuous process for the preparation of slush hydrogen. The process comprises substantially continuously injecting liquid hydrogen at a temperature slightly above its triple point temperature into a slush hydrogen generator; forming solid hydrogen by removing hydrogen vapor from the slush hydrogen generator; fracturing and dispersing surface solid as it is formed into the slush; concentrating the crystalline solid particles in the slush to a level of at least 30%, and preferably from 45 to 60%, by weight; and substantially continuously removing the slush hydrogen from said slush hydrogen generator at a rate such that a substantially constant level of slush is maintained in said slush hydrogen generator.

Continuous process for producing slush hydrogen

A method and apparatus for maintaining a liquid-frozen solid slush mixture in a vessel at a desired total slush mixture and desired solids content during conditions under which the solids in the slush mixture in the vessel are melting. The method comprises introducing fresh slush mixture to the vessel, while removing liquid from the vessel--both at rates directly proportional to the rate of solids melting in the vessel. The apparatus comprises an auxiliary vessel containing slush mixture and means for transferring slush mixture to the main vessel at one rate, means for transferring liquid from the main vessel to the auxiliary vessel at another rate, and means for controlling the transfer rates in a prescribed manner.

Method and apparatus for maintenance of slush mixture at desired level

This invention relates to a continuous process for the preparation of slush hydrogen by the freeze-thaw technique. The process comprises substantially continuously injecting liquid hydrogen at or near its triple point temperature into a slush hydrogen generator; forming solid hydrogen by removing hydrogen vapor from the slush hydrogen generator; alternately adjusting the pressure in the slush hydrogen generator to a pressure below the triple point of hydrogen and then to a pressure slightly above the pressure at the triple point thereby effecting formation and dispersion of solids in said slush; concentrating the crystalline solid particles in the slush to a level of at least 30%, and preferably from 45 to 60%, by weight; and substantially continuously removing the slush hydrogen from said slush hydrogen generator at a rate such that a substantially constant level of slush is maintained in said slush hydrogen generator.

The present invention relates to a water-gas shift process which is carried out in a non-aqueous, high boiling liquid medium, either in an ebullated or slurry mode. The function of the liquid is to provide a heat sink for the exothermic reaction thereby allowing for better performance and longer catalyst life. The process, termed 'liquid phase shift' (LPS) preferably uses commercially available vapor-phase low temperature shift (LTS) catalysts to accomplish the shift reaction. Because of the isothermality of the LPS process and its ability therefore to take advantage of higher catalyst activity, the average operating temperature is typically 260.degree. C. (500.degree. F.). This compares favorably to the lower average operating temperature for the conventional vapor-phase LTS process, which is typically 240.degree. C. (465.degree. F.). In addition, the LPS process can handle high carbon monoxide content feeds, e.g. 75 vol % carbon monoxide on a dry basis, without experiencing excessive catalyst deactivation. High carbon monoxide content feeds cannot be handled by convention LTS processing.

Liquid phase carbon monoxide shift process

The present invention relates to an improvement to a process for the production of methanol from synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen utilizing a three phase or liquid-phase reaction technology. The improvement to the process is the addition of relatively small amounts of water to the liquid-phase reactor thereby allowing for the use of a CO-rich synthesis gas for the production of methanol by effectuating in the same reactor the methanol synthesis and water-gas shift reactions. A portion of the unreacted synthesis gas stream from the liquid-phase reactor is separated into a hydrogen-rich component and a carbon monoxide-rich component. The hydrogen-rich component is combined with a portion of the unreacted synthesis gas stream from the liquid-phase reactor to form a gas-phase methanol reactor feed stream for producing methanol, and the carbon monoxide-rich component is combined with the unreacted effluent from the gas-phase methanol reactor to form a feed stream for combustion in a gas turbine.
