A coating system especially useful on transparent plastic substrates is provided which includes: (1) an initial primer coat of polymethylmethacrylate in a solution of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and diacetone alcohol, containing a small amount of an ultraviolet light absorbing compound, or a combination of an ultraviolet light absorbing compound and an ultraviolet radiation stabilizing agent, and (2) a secondary coat of a silicon resin coating composition. Such a coating system has a longer service life and improved resistance to delamination and discoloring compared to silicone resin coatings used with unmodified primers or coatings where ultraviolet light absorbers are added to the resin component only. Moreover, modification of the primer according to the invention will not significantly decrease the desirable adhesion properties, abrasion-resistance and optical clarity of silicone resin coating compositions.

Dual component coating system

Flame retardant thermoplastic compositions are described which comprise 30-98% by weight thermoplastic, 1-40% by weight of a silicone fluid, 1-20% by weight of metal soap precursors and 1-20% by weight of a silicone resin. Such compositions offer simpler processing, improved impact resistance and other advantages over conventional flame retardant thermoplastic compositions.

An improved silicone resin abrasion resistant coating composition is provided, the composition comprising a dispersion of colloidal silica in an aqueous-organic solvent solution of the partial condensate of a silanol and a small amount of a polysiloxane polyether copolymer, said organic solvent comprising a mixture of water miscible polar solvents which are aggressive to plastic.

Silicone resin coating composition especially suited for primerless

There is provided flame retardant thermoplastic compositions and masterbatch formulations effective for rendering thermoplastics flame retardant. A typical flame retardant composition could be comprised of 50 to 97 percent by weight of thermoplastic, 1 to 40 percent of a silicone base such as a linear silicone fluid or gum, 1 to 20 percent of a metal organic compound such as magnesium stearate, and 1 to 20 percent of a silicone resin such as MQ resin which is soluble in the silicone base.

Silicone flame retardants for plastics

An improved silicone resin abrasion resistant coating composition is provided, the coating composition having a pH in the range of from 6.8-7.8 and prepared by hydrolyzing an alkyltrialkoxysilane or aryltrialkoxysilane in an aqueous colloidal silica dispersion and adding thereto a small amount of an ultraviolet light absorbing compound, such as 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, to the hydrolysis product.

Silicone resin coating compositions

An improved silicone resin coating composition is provided, the composition comprising a dispersion of colloidal silica in an aliphatic alcohol-water solution of the partial condensate of a silanol with a small amount of a polysiloxane polyether copolymer added thereto.

Neutral to basic silicone resin abrasion resistant coating compositions can be adherently secured to cast acrylic plastic substrates without a primer if the substrate is provided with a wash coat of glacial acetic acid shortly before being coated with said silicone resin composition.

Process for securing primerless adhesion of silicone resin coating

A method for maintaining or improving the adhesion of silicone resin coating compositions to acrylic-primed plastic substrates comprises adding to the aliphatic alcohol-water medium of the composition a small, effective amount of a miscible solvent which is capable of softening, but not dissolving, the acrylic primer layer.
