Glass containers for storing pharmaceutical compositions

Disclosed herein are glass containers which may include a glass body comprising an alkali aluminosilicate glass composition having a Class HGA1 hydrolytic resistance when tested according to the ISO 720:1985 testing standard. The glass body may have an interior surface and an exterior surface. A heat-tolerant coating may be bonded to at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body. The heat-tolerant coating may have a coefficient of friction of less than about 0.7 and is thermally stable at a temperature of at least 260° C. for 30 minutes. The heat-tolerant coating may comprise a polymer, and the heat-tolerant coating may have a thickness of less than or equal to 100 nm.

Delamination resistant glass containers with heat-tolerant coatings

Disclosed herein are glass pharmaceutical vials having sidewalls of reduced thickness. In embodiments, the glass pharmaceutical vial may include a glass body comprising a sidewall enclosing an interior volume. An outer diameter D of the glass body is equal to a diameter di of a glass vial of size X as defined by ISO 8362-1, wherein X is one of 2R, 3R, 4R, 6R, 8R, 10R, 15R, 20R, 25R, 30R, 50R, and 100R as defined by ISO 8362-1. However, the sidewall of the glass pharmaceutical vial comprises an average wall thickness Tthat is less than or equal to 0.85*s, wherein sis a wall thickness of the glass vial of size X as defined by ISO 8362-1 and X is one of 2R, 3R, 4R, 6R, 8R, 10R, 15R, 20R, 25R, 30R, 50R, and 100R as defined by ISO 8362-1.

The embodiments described herein relate to chemically and mechanically durable glass compositions and glass articles formed from the same. In embodiments, the glass composition may include 74-78 mol. % SiO; X mol. % AlO, wherein X is 5-7; alkaline earth oxide comprising MgO and CaO, wherein: CaO is 0.1-1.0 mol. %; MgO is 4-7 mol. %; and a ratio (CaO (mol. %)/(CaO (mol. %)+MgO (mol. %)) is less than or equal to 0.5. The glass composition may further include Y mol. % alkali oxide, wherein the alkali oxide comprises 9-13 mol. % NaO and less than or equal to 0.4 mol. % of a fining agent. The glass composition may be free of boron and compounds of boron.

Glass compositions with improved chemical and mechanical durability

Disclosed herein are glass pharmaceutical vials having sidewalls of reduced thickness. In embodiments, the glass pharmaceutical vial may include a glass body comprising a sidewall enclosing an interior volume. An outer diameter D of the glass body is equal to a diameter dof a glass vial of size X as defined by ISO 8362-1, wherein X is one of 2R, 3R, 4R, 6R, 8R, 10R, 15R, 20R, 25R, 30R, 50R, and 100R as defined by ISO 8362-1. However, the sidewall of the glass pharmaceutical vial comprises an average wall thickness Tthat is less than or equal to 0.85*s, wherein sis a wall thickness of the glass vial of size X as defined by ISO 8362-1 and X is one of 2R, 3R, 4R, 6R, 8R, 10R, 15R, 20R, 25R, 30R, 50R, and 100R as defined by ISO 8362-1.

A strengthened glass container or vessel such as, but not limited to, vials for holding pharmaceutical products or vaccines in a hermetic and/or sterile state. The strengthened glass container undergoes a strengthening process that produces compression at the surface and tension within the container wall. The strengthening process is designed such that the tension within the wall is great enough to ensure catastrophic failure of the container, thus rendering the product unusable, should sterility be compromised by a through-wall crack. The tension is greater than a threshold central tension, above which catastrophic failure of the container is guaranteed, thus eliminating any potential for violation of pharmaceutical integrity.

Glass packaging ensuring container integrity

A glass container for storing pharmaceutical formulations may include a glass body formed from a Type IA or Type IB glass composition according to ASTM Standard E438-92(2011). The glass body may include a wall portion with an inner surface and an outer surface, a heel portion and a floor portion, wherein the inner surface of the glass container is formed by the inner surface of the glass body. The glass body may include at least a class A2 base resistance or better according to ISO 695, at least a type HGB2 hydrolytic resistance or better according to ISO 719 and Type 1 chemical durability according to USP <660>. The glass container does not comprise a boron-rich layer on the inner surface of the glass body in as formed condition.

Glass containers with delamination resistance and improved damage tolerance

A coated glass pharmaceutical package includes a glass body having a Type 1 chemical durability according to USP 660, at least a class A2 base resistance or better according to ISO 695, and at least a type HGB2 hydrolytic resistance or better according to ISO 719, the glass body having an interior surface and an exterior surface and a wall extending therebetween. A lubricous coating having a thickness of less than or equal to 90 nm may be positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the glass body but not on any portion of the interior surface. The portion of the coated glass package with the lubricous coating comprises a coefficient of friction that is at least 20% less than an uncoated glass package and the coefficient of friction does not increase by more than 30% after undergoing a depyrogenation cycle including exposure to a temperature of 250° C. for a time period of 30 minutes. A horizontal compression strength of the coated glass package is at least 10% greater than an uncoated glass package and the horizontal compression strength is not reduced by more than 20% after undergoing the depyrogenation cycle including exposure to a temperature of 250° C. for a time period of 30 minutes and then being abraded. The lubricous coating comprises a polymer.

Glass containers with improved strength and improved damage tolerance

In embodiments, a glass composition may include: greater than or equal to 71 mol. % and less than or equal to 83 mol. % SiO; greater than or equal to 1 mol. % and less than or equal to 11 mol. % AlO; greater than or equal to 5 mol. % and less than or equal to 18 mol. % alkali oxide, the alkali oxide comprising greater than 3 mol. % LiO and at least one of NaO and KO; greater than or equal to 1 mol. % and less than or equal to 8 mol. % alkaline earth oxide, the alkaline earth oxide comprising MgO and at least one of CaO, BaO, and SrO; and at least one of TiO, ZrO, HfO, LaOand YO, wherein TiO+ZrO+HfO+LaO+YOis greater than 0 mol. % and less than or equal to 6 mol. % and AlO+TiO+ZrO+HfO+LaO+YOis greater than or equal to 2 mol. % and less than or equal to 12 mol. %.

Chemically durable aluminosilicate glass compositions and glass articles formed therefrom

A glass article may include SiO, AlO, BO, at least one alkali oxide, and at least one alkaline earth oxide. The glass article may be capable of being strengthened by ion exchange. The glass article has a thickness t.
