A high efficiency incandescent light bulb includes a filament both electrically and optically heated to visibly incandesce. The filament is enclosed in a visibly transmissive, IR reflective filter, with a high view factor, as to maximize recycling of IR wavelengths. The filter is formed on two clamshell segments.

A colloidal suspension of particles is rapidly self-assembled with a minimum number of defects into a densely packed array of particles on a substrate under simultaneous sedimentation and annealing forces. The particles may be ordered as an opal structure. Optionally, the synthesized structure may incorporate an electrolyte and be used as a sacrificial form for micromolding an inverse structure. The inverse structure may exhibit a photonic band gap. Optionally, necking between particles may be adjusted after micromolding. Furthermore, a shell may alter physical properties, such as protecting a thermally stimulated photonic band gap device. These low cost methods allow more applications to become commercially viable.

A geometrically shaped photonic crystal structure consisting of alternating layers of thin films is heated to emit light. The structure may include index matching layers or a cavity layer to enhance emissions. The layer thicknesses of the structure may be spatially varied to modify the emission spectrum versus emission angle. The self-focusing structure may be fabricated into a convex electrically heated wire filament light bulb, a concave visible thermophotovoltaic emitter, a concentric directional heat exchanger, an electronic display, or a variety of irregularly shaped remotely read temperature or strain sensors.

Each power converter includes a pulse width modulator controller having a control pin. The method also includes when a voltage supply to the power controllers reads a particular level. After the particular level is met, the method includes providing a respective rising ramp control signal to each respective control pin of the pulse width modulator controller such that each respective power converter generates desired voltage level over time characteristics.
