An apparatus for tensioning a preform may include a mandrel to receive a preform. The mandrel may have a first mandrel end and a second mandrel end. The preform may have a first preform end and a second preform end. The apparatus may include an anchoring groove disposed at the first mandrel end, and an anchoring device being configured and located to urge the first preform end towards the anchoring groove to secure the first preform end therebetween. The apparatus may include a tensioning groove disposed between the first mandrel end and the second mandrel end, and a tensioning device being configured and located to urge at least a portion of the preform into the tensioning groove.

Device for tensioning a preform

A system and method for forming a hollow, complex, monolithic composite part. Composite material may be placed around the mandrel, then an internal impermeable membrane may be placed into and/or through tunnels formed in the mandrel. Next, an external impermeable membrane may be placed around the composite material and sealed against itself and the internal impermeable membrane such that the mandrel and the composite material are both contained in an airtight manner between the internal and external impermeable membranes. Air may then be removed from within the sealed impermeable membranes, compressing the impermeable membranes against the mandrel and/or the composite material. The consolidated composite material may be hardened to form the composite part. Finally, the impermeable membrane may be removed from around the hollow composite part and from within the mandrel, followed by removal of the mandrel from within the composite part by breaking it up into smaller pieces.

Method and system for forming a complex monolithic thermoset part

An apparatus to prepare a preform for fabrication includes a mandrel, anchoring groove, anchoring device, tensioning groove, and tensioning device. The mandrel receives the preform. The mandrel has a first mandrel end and a second mandrel end. The preform has a first preform end and a second preform end. The anchoring groove is disposed at the first mandrel end. The anchoring device is configured and located to urge the first preform end towards the anchoring groove to secure the first preform end therebetween. The tensioning groove is disposed between the first mandrel end and the second mandrel end. The tensioning device is configured and located to urge a portion of the preform into the tensioning groove.

Tensioning device for composite structures

An apparatus and method for tensioning material () over a mold (), such as a cure tool, comprises a tensioning fork () consisting of two substantially parallel tapered legs () between which material () is disposed. A tensioning fork () is positioned at a first side edge () and proximate a first end edge () of the material (). A first leg () of the tensioning fork () is disposed under the material (), and a second leg () of the tensioning fork () is disposed over the material (). When force is applied to the second leg (), it pivots about the first leg () along the length of the legs, remaining parallel to the first leg (), thereby pressing a portion of the material () against the mold ().

Method and apparatus for tensioning composite material

The present invention comprises a guard for racks that are used on cars and the like which comprise one or more elongated members comprised of a dense protective material such as styrofoam or foam rubber of a suitable thickness to ensure that the object to be placed on the rack will be protected. Each of the substantially elongated members comprises an upper outer surface with a recessed substantially concave inner surface capable of receiving and covering the horizontal bars of the guard. Attached to each end of the elongated member are attachment means for fastening the elongated member to the rack and which are also used to fasten one or more objects to the rack. Alternatively, objects may be attached to the guard through specifically configured straps for items such as skis, surfboards and the like.

A method of manufacturing a non-metallic honeycomb having a perforated septum embedded therein in a plane extending perpendicularly to cell walls of the honeycomb, the cell walls of the honeycomb each having discontinuous opposite outer edge surfaces, including the steps of protecting the cell walls with a protectant mixture applied to one of the outer edge surfaces; and laser drilling the septum with a plurality of laser beams originating from a point exterior to the cell walls opposite the covered edge surface in a direction parallel to said cell walls and perpendicular to the plane of the septum, the protectant mixture covering an area of the outer edge surface sufficient to prevent damage to the cell walls.

Method of manufacturing a non-metallic core having a perforated septum

A collector for radiant heat energy is disclosed, containing a radiation-absorbing heat-conducting panel in thermal contact with a series of 'riser' tubes, through which a working fluid flows, thereby carrying away the radiant heat incident on the panel and absorbed by the fluid. A pair of larger diameter 'header' pipes are connected to opposite ends of the riser tubes, providing access for the working fluid to and from the risers, and conducting the fluid to the pump driving the fluid motion and to the thermal 'load' or object desired to be heated. Each riser tube intersects and passes through the interior of each header pipe, and the short end of the riser tube emerging from the opposite side of the header pipe is sealed by means of a cap which may be removed to facilitate cleaning of the riser tubes. Fluid passes between the risers and headers through a series of 'metering holes' which are drilled through the walls of the riser tubes and located in the interior of the header pipes. These metering holes are sufficiently small to ensure that the fluid flows uniformly through all risers in any panel position, thereby minimizing temperature gradients in the panel and providing maximum thermal efficiency. In an alternative version, the panel is built up around an obstacle by cutting out sections of the risers which would otherwise intersect the obstacle and connecting the truncated ends of the risers to a common pipe which circumscribes the obstacle.
