A porous discriminating layer is formed on a ceramic support having at least one porous wall by (a) establishing a flow of a gas stream containing highly porous particles through the support to deposit a layer of the highly porous particles of a ceramic or ceramic precursor onto wall(s) of the support and (b) calcining said deposited layer to form the discriminating layer. This method is an inexpensive and effective route to forming a discriminating layer onto the porous wall.

Method for applying discriminating layer onto porous ceramic filters via gas-borne prefabricated porous assemblies

Densified composites of a metal such as copper or aluminum with a titanium-silicon-carbide or titanium-aluminum-carbide ceramic material are prepared by forming the ceramic material into a body, and infiltrating the body with the molten metal. The metal is able to rapidly penetrate into void spaces, between grain boundaries and even into the crystal structure of the ceramic grains to form a composite. The starting ceramic material may be previously densified, in which case various types of gradient structures can be produced easily. The process can be operated at low pressures, and so the hot pressing methods that normally must be used to densify these ceramic materials can be avoided.

Metal-infiltrated titanium&#x2014;silicon-carbide and titanium&#x2014;aluminum-carbide bodies

An improved aluminum-boron carbide (ABC) composite has been discovered that is comprised of a continuous network of AlBCand boron carbide grains having therein other isolated aluminum-boron carbide reactive phases and at most 2% by volume of isolated metal. The improved ABC composite may be formed by forming boron carbide particulates into a porous body that has a porosity of at most about 35%, where the boron particulates have been heat treated to a temperature of 1200&#xb0; C. to 1800&#xb0; C., infiltrating the porous body with aluminum or aluminum alloy until an infiltrated aluminum-boron carbide body is formed that has at most about 1% porosity, heat treating the infiltrated body for at least 25 hours at 1000&#xb0; C. to 1100&#xb0; C. to form an aluminum boron carbide composite having a continuous network of AlBCand boron carbide, and subsequently heat-treating to 700&#xb0; C. to 900&#xb0; C. to form the improved aluminum boron carbide composite.

Aluminum boron carbide composite and method to form said composite

In one embodiment, a composition () to be mixed with a molten metal to make a metal matrix composite, the composition characterized by: a ceramic reinforcing filler (), the ceramic reinforcing filler not being wettable by molten aluminum and/or not being chemically stable in molten aluminum, the ceramic reinforcing filler being coated with a ceramic material, the ceramic material being wettable by and chemically stable in molten aluminum. In a related embodiment, a composition () to make a porous preform to be infiltrated by molten metal to make a metal matrix composite, the composition characterized by: a ceramic reinforcing filler (), the ceramic reinforcing filler not being wettable by molten aluminum, the ceramic reinforcing filler being coated with a ceramic material () and optionally with a metal () such as nickel, the ceramic material being wettable by molten aluminum. The ceramic material can be coated on the ceramic reinforcing filler by a vacuum deposition technique such as vacuum sputtering.

Composition for making metal matrix composites

An aluminum-boron-carbon (ABC) ceramic-metal composite bonded to a metal or metal-ceramic composite other than ABC composite is made by forming a porous body comprised of particulates being comprised of a boron-carbon compound that has a particulate layer of titanium diboride powder on the surface of the porous body. The porous body is infiltrated with aluminum or alloy thereof resulting in the simultaneous infiltration of the TiBlayer, where the layer has an aluminum metal content that is at least about 10 percentage points greater by volume than the (ABC) composite. The ABC composite is then fused to a metal or metal-ceramic body through the infiltrated layer of titanium diboride, wherein the metal-ceramic body is a composite other than an aluminum-boron-carbon composite.

Method of bonding aluminum-boron-carbon composites

A composite is formed by inserting a ceramic powder into a channel of a preform to form a ceramic powder filled preform. The ceramic powder has at least one reactive ceramic powder. The preform is a ceramic, ceramic-metal composite, metal or combination thereof that has walls that define a plurality of channels each channel having an opening at a surface of the preform. The ceramic powder filled preform is infiltrated with a molten metal to form the ceramic-metal body, which has at least one ceramic phase that is a reaction product of the reactive ceramic and molten infiltrated metal.

Composite material and method of making the composite material

An improved particulate filtration system has an inlet, for the fluid to be filtered, connected to a housing containing a filter medium such that the fluid passes through the filter medium, and an outlet for the filtered fluid to exit. The filtration system's improvement is the filter medium being comprised of a porous ceramic of fused platelet grains. In a particular embodiment, the porous ceramic is a celsian porous ceramic, where the celsian grains have a hexagonal morphology and display a continuous volume thermal expansion coefficient from 100&#xb0; C. to 1000&#xb0; C.

Scientific apparatus and a method are described for observing simultaneously both structural and thermodynamic properties of materials. An X-ray diffractometer and a thermal analyzer and mounted to cooperate and coact on the same sample and to complete a meaningful analysis in a very few minutes. The diffractometer is equipped with a rapid position-sensitive detector connected to a multichannel analyzer to record and display X-ray diffraction data from the sample over an angle of 20.degree. (two theta) or more. The thermal analyzer is preferably a differential scanning calorimeter. By correlating X-ray diffraction and thermal data taken simultaneously while the sample is passing through a range of temperatures and/or environments, structural changes corresponding to thermal events can be identified and elucidated.
