A micro pump is formed on a substrate having a common inlet channel and a common outlet channel by a plurality of pumping elements, each pumping element having an inlet coupled to the common inlet channel and an outlet coupled to the common outlet channel, the inlet and outlet connected by a microfluidic channel, the microfluidic channel comprising a valvular conduit having low fluid flow resistance in a direction from the inlet to the outlet and high fluid flow resistance in a direction from the outlet to the inlet, and an actuating element arranged to cause fluid to be pumped through the microfluidic channel from the inlet to the outlet, wherein the actuating element is based on one or more of piezoelectric, thermal, electrostatic or electromagnetic transduction. A controller is coupled to actuate the actuating elements at mutually staggered relative timing so as to produce a substantially continuous steady flow.

Micro pumps

Inkjet printhead with an array of ejection chambers spaced in an array direction, each communicating with an ink orifice, inlet and outlet plenum chambers communicating with the ejection chambers, and inlet and outlet manifolds extending in the array direction and communicating with the plenum chambers through a porous sheet. While there are substantial net ink flows in the array direction in the inlet and the outlet manifolds, there is substantially no net flow in the array direction in the inlet or outlet plenum chamber. Ink pressure is therefore constant over the array of ejection chambers.

Droplet deposition apparatus

An ink jet printer with ink flowing through an ink chamber and over an ink ejection port leading to a nozzle has a deflection surface such as a chamfer at the junction of the chamber and the ejection port to inhibit debris from entering the port.

A hollow cylindrical support for a plurality of flow-through inkjet print heads has two folded wall sections cooperating to define elongate inlet and outlet ink manifolds, one wall section being thermally conducting so as to promote heat transfer along the length of the support, the other wall section being thermally insulating so as to inhibit heat transfer between the inlet and outlet manifolds. The thermally insulating section serves to trap a boundary layer of fluid, for example in a cavity wall or cellular material.

An ink supply system for a droplet deposition apparatus wherein the pressure at the nozzle is controlled by a remote point, said remote point being positioned in parallel with said print head. The flow restrictions in the printhead arm and the pressure control arm of the circuit being selected to achieve this.

A method of manufacturing an ink jet print head includes the steps of bonding a body of piezoelectric material to a base plate and cutting channels into the piezoelectric material to form ink chambers which are actuated by applying voltages to electrodes provided on surfaces of the chambers. The base plate carries IC's which contain the drive circuitry for actuating the ink chambers. To ensure reliable electrical connection between the chamber electrodes and the IC's, the electrodes and conducting tracks on the base plate are formed in a single step by depositing a conductive layer over both the PZT body and the base plate. A step of masking or selective removal of material may be performed to achieve the necessary patterning of the electrodes and tracks.

Method of manufacturing a droplet deposition apparatus

Droplet deposition apparatus comprises a fluid chamber comprising an actuator actuable by electrical signals to effect ejection of droplets from the fluid chamber, a drive circuit for supplying the electrical signals; and a conduit for supplying droplet fluid to said fluid chamber, the drive circuit being in substantial thermal contact with the conduit so as to transfer a substantial part of the heat generated in the drive circuit to the droplet fluid.

A droplet deposition apparatus includes an elongate chamber having a nozzle through which in operation droplets of liquid are ejected from the chamber for deposition, means for varying the pressure of liquid in the chamber by varying the volume thereof to effect ejection of the droplets and means for causing a flow of liquid in the chamber in addition to that necessary to replenish the ejected droplets, the flow passing across the nozzle to clean it.

Droplet deposition method and apparatus

A method for prevention of nozzle plate peel for inkjet printheads. The nozzle plate is bonded to the nozzle, with a layer of adhesive, and to a support, with a thicker layer of adhesive. This extra support prevents the peeling of the nozzle plate under the forces generated by, for example, a wiper blade passing over it. Spacers between the nozzle plate and support ensure the correct uniformity and constant thickness of the adhesive layer.

Droplet ejection apparatus

A piezoelectric printhead or other droplet deposition apparatus has parallel liquid containing channels defined by a base and displaceable walls, and covered by a cover number. The channels each have at least one nozzle for ejecting droplets. Each nozzle may be disposed in the base, the cover then having two ink supply parts spaced lengthwise of each channel on opposite sides of the nozzle. Alternatively two longitudinally spaced nozzles may be provided in the base of each channel. The cover may have a conductive track corrected to wall-displacing electrodes, the points of connection being outside the channels.

Droplet deposition apparatus for ink jet printhead

A droplet on demand inkjet apparatus utilizing a piezoelectric actuator arranged so as to deflect in shear mode, a method of ink jet printing, and a method of manufacturing an ink jet printing apparatus are disclosed. The apparatus is formed of a plurality of laminated plates arranged so as to define an ink chamber. The actuator forms one side of the chamber and deflects towards a nozzle formed in a nozzle plate which provides the opposite side of the chamber. An interconnect layer acts as the substrate and has orifices to allow the tracks to the drive chip to pass through. On the opposite side of the interconnect layer is the piezoelectric sheet. Electrodes are provided between the interconnect layer and the piezoelectric sheet. The piezoelectric sheet is carved, drilled or molded so as to provide parallel ink channels and a circular depression with a raised central reservation. The piezoelectric sheet is bonded to the interposer plate or ground electrode which in turn is bonded to the nozzle plate. When a charge is applied between the two electrodes, a selected actuator of the piezoelectric sheet deflects in shear mode towards the nozzle plate. This movement provides sufficient energy to eject a droplet from the nozzle. A number of short pulses could be applied so as to increase the size of the droplet ejected. A number of distinct pressure chambers connected only by the parallel ink channels are arranged in a two dimensional matrix which allows for increased distances between the actuators allowing for less densely packed electrical connection than are required in a linear array.

Drop on demand ink jet printing apparatus, method of ink jet printing, and method of manufacturing an ink jet printing apparatus

Drop-on-demand ink jet printing apparatus comprises a nozzle on a nozzle axis; an ink chamber communicating with the nozzle, a piezoelectric actuating structure, said structure extending around the nozzle axis and extending in the direction of the nozzle axis; an actuating surface facing the nozzle, said structure being actuable to move said actuating surface in the direction of the nozzle axis to effect droplet ejection through the nozzle; and electrodes for applying an actuating electric field to the actuating structure.

Drop on demand ink jet printing apparatus

To allow accurate positioning relative to a printer mechanism, a printhead is provided with a reference surface formed on a reference member. The reference member is attached to the base of the printhead but positioned with reference to a nozzle of an ink ejecting unit mounted on the base member. This obviates the need for the base member to be manufactured to narrow tolerances.

Method of manufacturing of printing apparatus

An inkjet printhead has ink channels separated one from the next by channels walls that are displaceable in response to actuating signals. Groups of adjacent channels are supplied by respective manifolds such that a single displaceable wall bounds channels belonging to adjacent channel groups. A simplification of the construction and manufacture of the printhead results.

Pulsed droplet deposition apparatus

In a method of making an ink jet printhead, corrugations are formed by laser ablation in the bonding surface of a polymer nozzle plate. Adhesive is applied to the micro-cavities thus formed and the nozzle plate is pressed against the end surface of the printhead until the surface lands in the nozzle plate abut on the surface of the printhead.
