A Z-directed capacitor according to one embodiment includes a body having top, bottom and side surfaces, a cross-sectional shape that is insertable into a mounting hole in a printed circuit board, and a plurality of stacked support members. Each support member includes an annular plate mounted on a surface thereof. A first conductive side channel and a second conductive side channel are formed in the side surface and extend along a top-to-bottom dimension of the body. A first set of the annular plates electrically contact the first conductive side channel but not the second conductive side channel and a second set of the annular plates electrically contact the second conductive side channel but not the first conductive side channel. A third conductive side channel is formed in the side surface, extends along the top-to-bottom dimension of the body and is electrically separated from the annular plates.

Z-directed capacitor components for printed circuit boards

An optical imaging apparatus includes an optical signal source, an optical signal detector apparatus, and a resonant amplifier assembly. The optical signal source is configured (i) to generate an optical signal including a carrier signal and an imaging signal, and (ii) to guide the optical signal to a sample. The optical signal detector apparatus is configured (i) to detect a modified optical signal from the sample, and (ii) to generate an electrical image signal based on the modified optical signal. The electrical image signal includes a background component and a modulated image signal corresponding to an image of the sample. The resonant amplifier assembly is electrically coupled to the optical signal detector apparatus and is configured (i) to isolate the modulated image signal from the background component, (ii) to amplify the modulated image signal, and (iii) to rectify the modulated image signal.

Method and device for optical imaging with a resonant amplifier assembly

A system for measuring an sample includes an illumination source providing electromagnetic radiation pulses at a selected temporal frequency. A microscope focuses the radiation to interact with the sample and produce resultant electromagnetic radiation. A disperser disperses wavelengths of the resultant radiation onto optical sensors, and respective resonant amplifiers amplify signals having the selected temporal frequency. Optical detection apparatus includes the optical sensors, resonant amplifiers, and disperser. The resonant amplifiers amplify portion(s) of their inputs having a selected temporal frequency and attenuate other portion(s). A method of analyzing constituents of a sample includes contemporaneously irradiating the sample with narrowband light and broadband light, the optical power of either modulated at a selected temporal frequency; dispersing wavelengths of resultant light across the optical detectors; and filtering respective signals from the optical detectors to provide spectrum data including signals corresponding to the selected temporal frequency.

System and method for multiplex spectroscopic imaging

A Z-directed signal pass-through component for insertion into a printed circuit board while allowing electrical connection from external surface conductors to internal conductive planes or between internal conductive planes. The Z-directed pass-through component is mounted within the thickness of the PCB allowing other components to be mounted over it. The body may contain one or more conductors and may include one or more surface channels or wells extending along at least a portion of the length of the body.

Z-directed pass-through components for printed circuit boards

A Z-directed signal delay line component for insertion into a printed circuit board while allowing electrical connection to internal conductive planes contained with the PCB. In one embodiment the Z-directed delay line component is housed within the thickness of the PCB allowing other components to be mounted over it. The delay line embodiments include a W-like line and a plurality of spaced apart, semi-circular line segment connected such that current flow direction alternates in direction between adjacent semi-circular line segments, each of which in other embodiments can be varied by use of shorting bars. Several Z-directed delay line components may be mounted into a PCB and serially connected to provide for longer delays. The body may contain one or more conductors and may include one or more surface channels or wells extending along at least a portion of the length of the body. Methods for mounting Z-directed components are also provided.

Z-directed delay line components for printed circuit boards

A Z-directed filter component for insertion into a printed circuit board while allowing electrical connection to internal conductive planes contained with the PCB. In one embodiment the Z-directed filter component is mounted within the thickness of the PCB allowing other components to be mounted over it. The filter may be T-filter or a Pi-filter within the body of the Z-directed component. The body may also contain one or more conductors and may include one or more surface channels or wells extending along at least a portion of the length of the body. Methods for mounting Z-directed components are also provided.

Z-directed filter components for printed circuit boards

A Z-directed capacitor component for insertion into a printed circuit board while allowing electrical connection to internal conductive planes contained within the PCB. In one embodiment the Z-directed capacitor component utilizes semi-cylindrical metallic sheets. In another embodiment, stack annular metallic disks are used. The Z-directed capacitor component mounts within the thickness of the PCB allowing other components to be mounted over it. Methods for mounting Z-directed components are also provided.

A spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) control and inspection circuit provides a system and method for inspecting and controlling an external SSCG, and for verifying the modulation profile waveform of an external SSCG. An electronic circuit is included that can check for the presence of an optimal SSCG modulation profile in product subsystems, and in attached modular systems, including electronic plug-in features such as internal network adapters and cartridges. In one mode of the invention, an electronic circuit ensures continued radiated emissions compliance for field replaceable units or consumable parts within a product, such as a printer, a scanner, or a combination (or all-in-one) printer/scanner. In another mode of the invention, an electronic circuit may also act as a secondary security device for consumable products, such as toner cartridges or ink jet cartridges. In yet another mode of the invention, an electronic circuit may also adjust the attached SSCG clock.

Spread spectrum clock interoperability control and inspection circuit

For EMI reduction the current modulation profile is preferably used for frequencies over 1 GHz while the frequency deviation is increased at least to &#xb1;2.5 MHz and the modulation frequency is increased to at least 150 kHz, preferably about 260 kHz. In an alternative embodiment, the modification frequency is 1 MHz or greater so that a segmented spectrum is achieved. For clocks having basic frequency below 1 GHz, but having strong harmonics higher than 1 GHz, modulation of the foregoing is combined with the slower modulation currently used. EMI reduction is realized both at the lower and the higher harmonics.

High frequency spread spectrum clock generation

An improved data signal electromagnetic emissions system is provided for sending data signals over one or more data pathways. An original data signal is encoded into a set of sideband frequencies that exhibit a lower amplitude than the original data signal; then transmitted over the data pathway and later decoded back into a signal having the original data content. The encoding scheme uses a number of modulation pattern sets that each produce a set of sidebands about the data signal's fundamental and certain harmonic frequencies, in a manner that attempts to make the maximum amplitudes for each set of sidebands substantially equal to one another, although this is also dependent upon the data signal's frequency content.

Method and apparatus for reducing EMI emissions for data signals traveling over a data pathway

A multiple output spread spectrum clock circuit is provided that reduces electromagnetic emissions when two different clocks operate at frequencies which overlap one another. Two such clock circuits are controlled so as to introduce a phase difference between the clocks as they operate through their spread spectrum profiles. The &ldquo;best&rdquo; phase differences are around 18%, or around 50%, between adjacent spread spectrum clock outputs. The phase difference can be controlled by starting the first clock (SSCG &num;1) at one point in time, while temporarily delaying the start of the second clock (SSCG &num;2) until the appropriate moment; alternatively, it can be controlled by starting both clocks at the same moment in time, however, SSCG &num;1 begins at one point in the spread spectrum profile, while SSCG &num;2 begins at a different point in its spread spectrum profile.

Method and apparatus for providing multiple spread spectrum clock generator circuits with overlapping output frequencies

A segmented spectrum clock generator is provided that exhibits a frequency response having multiple segments that with a sharp rolloff on both sides of each individual segment's peak amplitude across the entire frequency spectrum. In order to meet proposed new CISPR-22 rules, each segment must roll off by at least 10 dB at adjacent frequencies that are &plusmn;150 kHz on both sides of (or offset from) each of the peaks. The segmented spectrum clock generator output signal is generated by a frequency synthesizer circuit that modulates the output frequency at a predetermined rate between a &ldquo;lower bound&rdquo; and an &ldquo;upper bound&rdquo; of modulation frequencies. Moreover, the modulation of the output frequencies is controlled so as to form a &ldquo;segmented sperm&rdquo; frequency domain output that has rather distinct peaks and valleys, and whose modulation profile has a graphical appearance of frequency vs. time that is somewhat &ldquo;peaky,&rdquo; although many other profile shapes could instead be used.
