An improved method and system for cooling the sulfur dioxide gas stream flowing from a sulfur furnace to a catalytic converter in a sulfur trioxide flue gas conditioning system. Water is injected into the sulfur dioxide gas stream upstream of the catalytic converter as appropriate to maintain the temperature at the inlet of the catalytic converter at a desired level.

A device for holding fasteners or small tools includes no pocket or pouch in which a craftsman must reach in order to select a fastener or tool. The pocketless device holds the fasteners or small tools in an open arrangement, openly accessible to the working craftsman. Disclosed is an improved system for treating boiler flue gas to improve the removal of particulate matter contained therein by electrostatic precipitation. The improved system includes a source of liquid sulfuric acid, a source of water, a mixer for mixing the sulfuric acid and the water to form a dilute sulfuric acid, a first pipe for conveying the sulfuric acid from the acid source to the mixer, a first meter for controlling the amount of liquid sulfuric acid conveyed to the mixer through the first pipe, a second pipe for conveying the water from the water source to the mixer, a second meter for controlling the amount of water conveyed to the mixer through the second pipe, an injector for injecting the mixture of sulfuric acid and water from the mixer into the flue gas conduit before the particulate removing device in droplets small enough that the heat of the heated flue gas will cause the droplets to evaporate, and a third pipe for conveying the mixture of sulfuric acid and water from the mixer to the injector. The disclosed invention allows for the conditioning of flue gases by a system which is simple and inexpensive to install, maintain and operate, which requires no additional heat to vaporize the dilute sulfuric acid prior to injection, and which requires very little power, especially when compared to a conventional SO.sub.3 system.

A flue gas conditioning system generates sulfur trioxide which is injected into boiler flue gas to condition it by reducing the resistance of the particulate matter entrained in the flue gas. The conditioned flue gas is passed through an electrostatic precipitator which collects the particulate matter by electrostatic precipitation. The sulfur trioxide concentration in the flue gas is measured with a mass spectrometer downstream of where the sulfur trioxide was injected into the flue gas and upstream of the electrostatic precipitator. The concentration of the sulfur trioxide in the flue gas is measured with a mass spectrometer at a point where the injected sulfur trioxide has uniformly mixed with the flue gas. The measured sulfur trioxide concentration is used to control the flue gas conditioning system, such as by comparing the measured concentration to a desired concentration range and adjusting the amount of sulfur trioxide being injected into the flue gas accordingly.

Boiler flue gas conditioning system

A flue gas conditioning system and method generates and introduces sulfur trioxide into flue gas produced by a boiler to condition the flue gas before it passes through an electrostatic precipitator. Flue gas is withdrawn from the flue duct which couples the boiler to the electrostatic precipitator and cleaned to provide a source of sulfur dioxide. The withdrawn flue gas is passed through a heater and then into a catalytic converter which converts native SO.sub.2 in the flue gas into SO.sub.3 which is then introduced back into the flue duct to condition the flue gas. The present invention provides a flue gas conditioning system and method for generating conditioning agent used in the removal of entrained particles in a flue gas flow with an electrostatic precipitator. The invention involves a catalytic converter that is operable between an operative position where the flue gas is exposed to the catalyst and converts SO.sub.2 contained in the flue gas to SO.sub.3 when conditioning agent is needed and an inoperative position where the flue gas is not exposed to the catalyst when conditioning agent is no longer needed. The catalytic converter and related assembly may take variable configurations to accommodate various flue gas ductworks and space limitations and may carry one or more SO.sub.2 /SO.sub.3 converters providing a plurality of open and generally parallel flow paths of the flue gas.

A flue gas conditioning system uses the waste heat of the flue gas to heat a sulfuric acid solution to add sufficient heat energy to the solution to vaporize the solution before being injected into the flue gas to condition the flue gas so that particulate removal by a precipitator is enhanced.

The present invention provides a flue gas conditioning system and method for generating conditioning agent used in the removal of entrained particles in a flue gas flow with an electrostatic precipitator. The invention involves the use of a catalytic converter movable between an operative position where the flue gas flows through the catalyst and converts SO.sub.2 contained in the flue gas to SO.sub.3 when conditioning agent is needed and an inoperative position where the flue gas does not flow through the catalyst when conditioning agent is no longer needed. The movable catalytic converter and related assembly may take variable configurations to accommodate various flue gas ductworks and space limitations and may carry one or more SO.sub.2 /SO.sub.3 converters providing a plurality of open and generally parallel flow paths of the flue gas that are formed by a catalyst effective over a wide range of temperatures for the controlled conversion of preferably a low percentage of SO.sub.2 in the flue gas to SO.sub.3.

Improved apparatus and methods for the treatment of boiler flue gas with sulfur trioxide conditioning agent include the beneficial use of catalytic converters that can be located immediately adjacent the injection site for their sulfur trioxide output, that can be individually sized and manufactured for variable required conditioning agent outputs, that can be individually controlled and can provide substantially improved conversion efficiency and that can provide an efficient, flexible, effective and relatively inexpensive multi-boiler flue conditioning system.

The present invention relates to a flue gas conditioning agent demand control apparatus for controlling a flow of conditioning agent for removal of entrained particles in a flue gas with an electrostatic precipitator having at least one charging electrode and at least one collecting electrode through the use of a signal determined from a rate of discharge of a charged electrode of the electrostatic precipitator.

A flue gas conditioning system features a self-contained sulfur burner control loop that operates to maintain a constant desired temperature supply of sulfur dioxide in air by varying the rate of supply of sulfur fuel to the sulfur burner, and the absence of device in the sulfur flow path to measure or monitor sulfur flow rate. In the system, a conditioning agent demand signal operates either a means to supply the sulfur burner with a flow of air, or an air heater in the air flow path upstream of the sulfur burner, or both, to provide conditions that would increase or decrease the temperature of the sulfur burner output absent the self-contained sulfur burner control loop, and as a result of the operation of the self-contained sulfur burner control loop, systems of the invention can provide a demanded flow of sulfur dioxide and air at a substantially constant concentration and a desired temperature to a catalytic converter in response to a conditioning agent demand signal.

SO.sub.3 flue gas-condition systems (10) provide a controlled flow of flue gas-conditioning agent such as SO.sub.3 into a boiler flue gas and its entrained particulate material ahead of an electrostatic precipitator (14). The systems (10) monitor the opacity of the stack effluent and precipitator power and operate to maintain a flow of SO.sub.3 -conditioning agent into the boiler flue gas to provide minimal opacity of the stack effluent. The systems operate at SO.sub.3 -conditioning agent flow rate corresponding to minimal opacity of the stack effluent and to eliminate corrections that may be due to transient operating conditions such as boiler upsets, precipitator rapping and the like. The systems include features providing improved conversion of SO.sub.2 into SO.sub.3, integrated assemblies to provide a flow of SO.sub.2 and sulfur dioxide conversion units adapted to convert SO.sub.2 into SO.sub.3 at a plurality of remote SO.sub.3 injection sites.

A roofing speed square of right-triangular shape and methods to use same wherein rafter base cut marks may be made in one step and rafter common cut marks may be made more easily, accurately and safely than marks made employing currently available devices are disclosed. The speed square has a measurement edge, a base edge and a hypotenuse edge. The base edge is T-shaped in cross section. The measurement edge has indicia in units of roof unit rise. When the speed square corner opposite said measurement edge is superimposed on the top corner of the rafter to be marked, and the measurement edge indicia value corresponding to the unit rise of the roof upon which the rafter is to be installed is aligned with the top edge of said rafter, then the speed square hypotenuse may be used as a ruling edge whereby the base cut mark may be drawn. When the speed square corner opposite said measurement edge is superimposed on the top edge of the rafter to be marked, and the measurement edge indicia value corresponding to the unit rise of the roof on which the rafter is installed is aligned with the top edge of said rafter, then the speed square measurement edge may be used as a ruling edge whereby the common cut marks may be drawn.
