An airfoil vane assembly includes a vane piece defining a first vane platform, a second vane platform, and a hollow airfoil section joining the first vane platform and the second vane platform. The first vane platform defines a collar projection therefrom. A spar piece defines a spar platform and a spar extends from the spar platform into the hollow airfoil section. The spar platform includes a radial opening defined by first and second axial faces. The radial opening is configured to receive the collar projection, and a groove in the first axial face. A seal is situated in the groove. The seal seals against the collar projection and a biasing member is configured to bias the seal towards the collar projection. A method of assembling a vane is also disclosed.

A method of assembly includes locating a plurality of vanes about an inner circumference of a ring, the ring has a plurality of axially-extending projections circumferentially-spaced around the ring, each of the vanes has a radially outer platform, a flange that projects radially outwardly from the radially outer platform, and a notch that extends axially through the flange such that the notch opens at forward and aft flange faces of the flange, aligning the notch of each of the vanes with a corresponding one of the axially-extending projections on the ring, and inserting the projection into the notch to thereby prevent the vanes from rotating relative to the ring.

A section of a gas turbine engine includes a ceramic component and a metallic component situated adjacent the ceramic component. The ceramic component and the metallic component are situated outside of a core flow path of the gas turbine engine. The section of a gas turbine engine also includes an interface between the ceramic component and a metallic component and a mullite-based coating disposed at the interface. The coating provides thermal protection to the ceramic component and the metallic component, and provides thermochemical protection against interaction between the ceramic component and the metallic component. A gas turbine engine and a method of protecting components in a gas turbine engine are also disclosed.

A method of coating a seal slot includes applying a coating to a slot in a component and machining the coating to provide an open height configured to receive a seal. After the machining a surface roughness of the coating is less than about 100 ra. A scaling assembly is also disclosed.

A seal system a ceramic component having a surface region defining a first surface roughness, a metallic component situated adjacent the surface region, and a coating system disposed on the surface region. The coating system includes a silicon-containing layer on the surface region and a barrier layer on the silicon-containing layer. The silicon-containing layer has a surface in contact with the barrier layer. The barrier layer has a surface in contact with the metallic component. The surface of the barrier layer has a second surface roughness that is less than the first surface roughness. The barrier layer limits interaction between silicon of the silicon-containing layer and elements of the metallic component. The barrier layer has a coefficient of thermal expansion that is within about 60% of a coefficient of thermal expansion of the ceramic component. A gas turbine engine and a method are also disclosed.

A method of fabricating an airfoil includes providing an airfoil core tube that is made of a rigidized ceramic fabric, using the airfoil core tube as a mandrel by braiding a plurality of ceramic fiber tows around the airfoil core tube to form one or more braided layers, where the airfoil core tube and the one or more braided layers forming an airfoil preform, and densifying the airfoil preform with a ceramic matrix material to thereby form a ceramic matrix composite airfoil.

A method of repairing a nonconforming article includes applying a machinable coating to an article with a nonconformance. The article includes a preform at least partially infiltrated with a matrix material, to form a repaired article. A gas turbine engine includes a ceramic wall for bounding an engine core gas path. The ceramic wall has a ceramic wall first side that faces the engine core gas path and a ceramic wall second side that faces away from the engine core gas path. There is a metallic wall adjacent the ceramic wall second side. The metallic wall has a metallic wall first side that faces the ceramic wall and a metallic wall second side that faces away from the ceramic wall. The metallic wall and the ceramic wall are spaced apart such that there is a channel there between. There is a seal on the ceramic wall second side, and the metallic wall has at least one cooling hole adjacent the seal for emitting cooling air to cool the seal.

A vane system includes a plurality of vane assemblies and a continuous support ring. The vane assemblies are arranged circumferentially about an axis and each include a hollow airfoil fairing and a spar. The spar has a spar flange and a spar leg extending radially inwardly from the spar flange and through the hollow airfoil fairing. The continuous support ring has radially inner and outer sides and defines a circumferential row of through-holes between the radially inner and outer sides. The spar legs extend through the through-holes and the spar flanges are affixed at the radially outer side of the continuous support ring.

A gas turbine engine turbine blade includes a turbine blade body including an inner platform. An airfoil extends radially outwardly of the inner platform. The airfoil has a leading edge and a trailing edge, and a suction wall and a pressure wall. The turbine blade body has mount structure including at least one circumferentially outwardly extending mount portion on a suction wall side and a pressure wall side each having a radially outer face. The turbine blade body is formed of one of a polymer, metal or ceramic matrix composite. There is a protective coating on the radially outer faces of the at least one enlarged mount portions. A gas turbine engine is also disclosed.

A flow path component assembly includes a flow path component that has a platform that extends from a first circumferential side to a second circumferential side. The platform has a first radius of curvature between the first circumferential side and the second circumferential side. A coating is arranged on a portion of the platform near the first circumferential side. The coating has a second radius of curvature. The second radius of curvature is larger than the first radius of curvature.

Variable thickness machinable coating for platform seals

A plurality of static stator vane are circumferentially spaced in a row axially intermediate the rows of turbine blades. Each stator vane has at least an outer platform with mount structure. Each of the stator vanes are formed of composite materials. The mount structure is provided with sacrificial material. At least a first of the stator vanes is circumferentially adjacent to a second of the stator vanes. An orientation of the first of the stator vanes is re-staggered relative to the second of the stator vanes. The sacrificial material of the first of the stator vanes is machined away such that a final trailing edge of the first of the stator vanes mount structure is now better axially aligned with the trailing edge of the second of the stator vanes mount structure trailing edge.

An assembly for a gas turbine engine includes a plurality of vanes having a radially outer platform with a flange that extends radially outward therefrom and a plurality of notches in the flange. A ring is located radially outward from the radially outer platform of the plurality of vanes. An axially extending projection extends through and corresponds with each of the plurality of notches on the flange.

A heat shield includes a first wall defined between a first end and a second end; a second wall defined between the first end and the second end, the second wall connected to the first wall at the first and second ends; a space defined between the first wall and the second wall; and thermal insulation disposed in the space. A gas turbine engine and a method of installing a heat shield in a gas turbine engine are also disclosed.
