The present invention relates to slip-resistant machine washable floor mats particularly suitable for use in motor vehicles. The floor mats have an upper carpet fabric layer attached with adhesive or by flame lamination to a lower layer of coarse-celled reticulated polyurethane foam having pore sizes within the range of 3 to 80 pores per linear inch (about 0.19 to about 0.02 inch cell diameter). The floor mat has an air permeability greater than about 5 (ft.sup.3 /min.)/ft.sup.2 at 0.5 inch of water pressure drop, which enhances the washing and drying ability of the entire mat.

Polyurethane foam is modified by a post-treatment process comprising the steps of contacting the polyurethane foam with a swelling agent for the polyurethane foam and interpenetrating the swollen foam with a chemical additive, then shrinking the interpenetrated foam by removing the swelling agent under conditions where the chemical additive remains trapped in the polymeric structure of the foam.

Heat activated, fabric conditioning products comprising a thick, absorbent substrate impregnated with fabric-conditioner chemicals are suitable for use at elevated temperatures encountered in laundry dryers. Prior to being used, such products tend to be stiff and boardy because of the brittle, wax-like properties of the fabric conditioner chemicals at ambient temperature. The stiff, boardy properties are substantially eliminated by temporarily compressing the thick impregnated substrate to less than 70% of its original thickness.
