A fusable powder composition comprising a cross-linkable organic polymeric material of less than 75 micron size, an organic peroxide, and preferably for some polymers an organosilicon compound for forming polymeric coatings on substrates such as glass or metal.

A three component LTHA stabilizer system of distearyl thiodipropionate, tris(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl isocyanurate, sold under the trademark Goodrite 3114 and cyclic neopentanetetrayl bis(octadecylphosphite), sold under the trademark Weston 618 particularly suitable for glass fiber reinforced homopolypropylene or acrylic acid grafted propylene polymers. Key parts of the invention include well defined ratios of the thioester and phenolic components and good dispersion of the glass fiber to achieve the desired stability. The stabilizer system is good for other acrylic acid grafted polypropylene polymers which include impact modifiers. Other grafting monomers can be substituted for the acrylic acid.

A process for producing fine polymer powders which comprises dissolving 1 to 40 weight percent of a polymer in a solvent at a temperature in the range of 90.degree. to 165.degree. C under autogenous conditions, cooling the solution to a temperature to precipitate the polymer and to leave in solution an amount of polymer less than that which will inhibit the formation of droplets upon atomization of the solution into a drying zone, said cooling being carried out under agitation conditions of high shear, to produce a slurry of particulate polymer and solvent, atomizing said slurry into a vaporization zone, feeding a drying gas into the vaporation zone at a temperature in the range of 90.degree. to 160.degree. C, recovering the partially dry polymer particles, drying the particles and recovering a polymer powder of less than 100 micron size.

Process for preparing polymer powders

Finely powdered high density polymer may be obtained by spraying a solution of a critical maximum amount of a polymer, such as 3 weight % polypropylene in heptane, into a drying atmosphere in which said solvent has a vapor pressure of 50 to 400 mm of Hg.

Process for preparing finely divided polymers

A high density polymer powder is prepared by preparing a melt of the polymer, and intimately mixing from 10 to 50 weight percent of a solvent therewith, and discharging the mixture through an atomizing nozzle.

Polyolefins which have been modified by being graft polymerized with from about 1 to 15 weight percent of an acrylic acid or derivative thereof are outstanding nucleating agents when added to unmodified polyolefins in concentrations of about 0.1 to 15 weight percent.
