The invention relates to cathodically electrodepositable coating compositions comprising an aqueous dispersion of self-crosslinkable resin. The self-crosslinkable resin is amine and epoxide functional and prepared by reacting epoxide resin with fatty amidopolyamine at about room temperature so as to form a partially crosslinked resin, wherein at least about 50 percent of the amine groups have been neutralized with a water soluble acid. The partially crosslinked resin can be deposited from the bath onto a metal substrate and cured at elevated temperatures to form a coating offering excellent corrosion protection and having excellent adhesion to the substrate.

Self-crosslinkable electrocoat resins prepared by room temperature

A coagulation process for coating various substrates with organic resins which may be admixed with reactive or nonreactive particles. The process comprises (A) providing the substrate to be coated with a dry coagulating compound surface and (B) exposing said substrate to an aqueous bath comprising an organic film forming material, at least fifty (50) weight percent of which is a chemically ionizable organic film-former which (i) has at least 12 carbon atoms per molecule; (ii) is at least partially ionized such that it is substantially soluble in said aqueous bath; and (iii) coagulates in the presence of said coagulating compound.
