A solid, particulate catalyst composition is provided containing an active nickel component in which the nickel constitutes from about 25 to about 60 wt % of the catalyst composition; a molybdenum component in which the molybdenum constitutes from about 5 to about 20 wt % of the catalyst composition; and a binder component comprising at least one of oxides of silica, zirconium, aluminum, zinc and calcium, each of the calcium, aluminum and zinc being present in an amount no greater than about 2 wt %, preferably about 0 to 1 wt %. The catalyst is designed for the selective hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropanal to 1,3-propanediol in aqueous solution.

In one embodiment, the invention relates to a catalyst in powdered form comprising the oxides of copper, iron, aluminum and manganese wherein the atomic ratio of copper to iron is at least 1:1. In another embodiment, the invention relates to a process for preparing such hydrogenation catalysts which comprises the steps of (A) preparing a first aqueous solution containing at least one water-soluble copper salt, at least one water-soluble iron salt, and at least one water-soluble manganese salt; (B) preparing a second solution containing at least one water-soluble basic aluminum salt and at least one alkaline precipitating agent; (C) mixing the first and second solutions wherein an insoluble solid is formed; (D) recovering the soluble solid; and (E) calcining the recovered solid to form the desired catalyst. The invention also relates to a process for hydrogenating aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid esters.

A hydrotreating catalyst is described which comprises at least one Group VI metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, and at least one Group VIII metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide, supported on a carrier wherein (A) the catalyst comprises from about 10% to about 35% by weight of combined metal, and the atomic ratio of the Group VIII metal to Group VI metal is in the range of from about 0.5:1 to about 2:1; (B) the carrier comprises from about 0.5 to about 10 weight percent of halogen, from about 0.5 to about 5% by weight of silica and from about 85 to about 99% of alumina; and (C) the catalyst is characterized as having a median pore radius of from about 30 to about 65 Angstroms, and a surface area of from about 120 to about 180 m.sup.2 /g. Also described are novel and improved procedures for preparing the catalyst is useful in the production of lubricating oils from crude hydrocarbon oil stocks in that the hydrotreating process results in the formation of oils having increased viscosity indexes, reduced aromatic content and improved stability. The catalysts of this invention can be used effectively in either or both stages of a two-stage hydrotreating process or in a single stage hydrotreating process. The nitrogen and sulfur contents of the oils also are reduced through the use of the catalyst in the hydrogenation process.
