An apparatus includes a string that extends into a well and a tool that is disposed in the string. The tool is adapted to form a seat to catch an object communicated to the tool via a passageway of the string in response to the tool being perforated.

Method and apparatus for completing a multi-stage well

A technique includes running a seat assembly on a conveyance line into a tubing string, which has previously been installed in a well. The seat assembly includes a seat, which is adapted to receive an untethered object. The technique includes attaching the seat assembly to the string at a location downhole in the well; receiving the object to create a fluid barrier; and diverting fluid using the fluid barrier.

A technique that is usable with a well includes communicating a stabilized treatment slurry downhole into the well and dehydrating a portion of the slurry to form a barrier in the well.

Technique and apparatus to form a downhole fluid barrier

A technique includes deploying a string that includes a seat assembly in a well; and running a shifting tool in a passageway of the string. The shifting tool shifts the seat assembly to cause the seat assembly to transition between a first state in which the seat assembly forms a seat that is adapted to allow an untethered object communicated in the passageway of the string to pass through the seat assembly to a second state in which the seat assembly is adapted to catch the object to form a fluid barrier in the string. The fluid barrier is used to divert fluid in the tubing string to perform, for example, a stimulation operation.

The present invention provides an apparatus and method of orienting perforating gun strings conveyed on a tool string. One embodiment of the present invention provides an orienting weight provided in a portion of the perforating device, such as the shaped charge, the loading tube or the gun housing. An adapter is provided intermediate the tool string that facilitates conveyance of the gun string downhole. Additionally, the adapter enables the gun string to rotate independent of the tool string.

A hands-free connection system is provided for coupling downhole tools for use in well operations. The connection system includes two downhole tools connectable together in threaded engagement. The connection system further includes a compressible locking sleeve positioned between the coupled downhole tools for maintaining the tools in threaded engagement and in a predetermined alignment for deployment downhole.

The loading tube comprises cups forming cup cavities for enclosing an explosive charge within each of the cups. The loading tube has ridges and valleys providing longitudinal and lateral strength to the loading tube. The loading tube is constructed of a formed material such as paper pulp, high-density polystyrene, plastic or sheet metal.

The present invention provides an apparatus and method of orienting perforating gun strings. One embodiment of the present invention provides an orienting weight provided in a portion of the perforating device, such as the shaped charge, the loading tube or the gun housing. Additional weight may be provided as separate components and attached to the gun components.

Method and apparatus for orienting perforating devices and confirming their orientation

The present invention provides a gun brake system adapted to slow the descent of a tool string in a well. In one embodiment, the brake system comprises a brake installed within the well and having a snug fitting restriction and one or more fluid channels extending along a portion thereof. The brake system further provides means for maintaining the fluid volume substantially constant within the production tubing to which the gun brake is installed.

The subject matter of the present invention relates to perforating gun carriers and their methods of manufacture. In one embodiment of the present invention, high strength, uniform wall thickness carriers are manufactured through use of the electric resistance weld process.

A tool string for use in a well includes a filter sub (or trapped pressure regulator sub) that is used with other components to reduce trapped pressure. The filter sub filters out debris that may occur from various types of downhole operations, such as perforating operations. By filtering out larger debris, only gases, liquids, and smaller particles are allowed to enter various components of the tool string. Without the presence of larger solid debris inside certain components of the tool string, the likelihood of plugs being formed is reduced so that gases and liquids can more readily pass out of the tool string as the tool string is retrieved to the surface of the well and the well hydrostatic pressure decreases.

Method and apparatus to reduce trapped pressure in a downhole tool

A technique includes arranging perforating charges of a perforating gun into groups of adjacent perforating charges. Each perforating charge of each group is aligned in a direction associated with the group. The groups are oriented to form a phasing for the perforating gun.
