A golf club head includes a plurality of elongated strips of insert material in the face of the club head. The face is provided with a plurality of recesses, and the insert material fills the recesses. The face may also be provided with an elongated groove between each pair of adjacent recesses.

A golf club head is provided with a cavity which has a pair of side walls which extend at an angle of about 0.degree. to about 50.degree. to the hosel of the club head. The shape of the cavity positions a substantial portion of the weight of the club head in the upper portion of the toe of the club head and in the lower portion of the heel of the club head. The orientation of the weight of the club head provides a substantial moment of inertia about an axis which extends through the center of gravity at an angle of about 45.degree..
