One embodiment of an inventive networking environment includes clients called sending clients because they send network content through a network, and clients called receiving clients because they receive the network content from the sending clients through the network. Both sending clients and receiving clients are 'clients' in that they rely on a management server to orchestrate the secure transfer of information from sending clients to receiving clients.

In a coordinated computer system for encoding, transmitting, and decoding a series of data packets such as audio and/or video data, there may be a skew between the clock used by an encoder and the clock used by a decoder. In a method and device for compensating for this clock skew, the decoder calculates a drift metric representing the clock skew and modifies the time stamps of the data packets based on the drift metric. The decoder also performs a sample rate conversion on the digital data, in order to compensate for the clock skew between the encoder and decoder.

Management computers of a packet-switched computer network allocate transmission bandwidth for transmissions such as those for conferences between client computers of the network. Callers and callees request bandwidth from their associated managers for transmissions. Managers monitor and allocate bandwidth taking into account whether the transmissions are between local clients or local and external clients. Managers maintain records of active transmissions, but need not maintain lists of client computers with which the managers are associated.

A continuous stage variable is generated with a state machine of a controller. A level of transmit attenuation and a level of receive attenuation are generated by the controller using the continuous state variable. Local audio signals generated with a local microphone are attenuated with a transmit attenuator at the level of transmit attenuation for transmission to a remote node. Remote audio signals received from the remote node are attenuated with a receive attenuator at the level of receive attenuation for playback at a local speaker.

Client computers on a computer network send messages informing their management computer on the network of the status of transmissions such as those for conferences involving the client computers. Managers use the messages to maintain records of active transmissions to (1) discover transmissions that started without explicit authorization from the managers and (2) delete transmission records corresponding to transmissions that terminated without explicitly notifying the managers.

A local histogram is generated with a controller based on local audio signals generated with a local microphone.
