A previously unknown phase of .alpha.-hexathienyl, designated .alpha.-6T/HT, exhibits diffraction peaks at 2.theta.=4.31.degree., 8.64.degree., 12.96.degree., 17.32.degree., 26.15.degree. and 29.08.degree. in a CuK.sub..alpha. powder X-ray diffraction pattern, and is expected to have properties (e.g., high hole mobility) that make the phase desirable for use in, e.g., thin film transistors. Substitution of thin films of .alpha.-6T/HT for prior art organic thin films in thin film transistors and other devices is contemplated.

Crystals of potassium titanyl phosphate suitable for device applications are grown by a hydrothermal process. By maintaining the growth temperature substantially below conventional levels, the crystal growth rate is maintained, and noble metal-lined vessels are employable.

Hydrothermal growth of potassium titanyl phosphate

High quality crystals of materials that are essentially silicon-free are produced in a low pressure hydrothermal growth process through a specific expedient. In particular, the aqueous solution utilized in the pressure vessel during growth is introduced in significantly larger quantities than previously thought to be acceptable.

Hydrothermal crystal growth processes

AlPO.sub.4 crystals are isomorphic with quartz and are expected therefore to have several crystal orientations in which the elastic (piezoelectric) constants are relatively insensitive to temperature. The piezoelectric coupling coefficients of AlPO.sub.4 are approximately three times those of quartz. Hydrothermal growth techniques to date have been marginal, and all have employed H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 as the hydrothermal solution. We describe using HCl as the hydrothermal solution and demonstrate the superiority of HCl from the standpoint of solubility and consequent crystal growth rate.
