Methods for making a heterogeneous polymer blend comprising one or more anionic polymers, one or more cationic polymers, and one or more non-ionic polymers, which method comprises (a) adding to a non-neutral solution a first amount of polymerization initiator and one or more anionic or cationic monomers, wherein each monomer has the same charge; (b) adding a second amount of the polymerization initiator and one or more non-ionic monomers; (c) adding a third amount of the polymerization initiator and one or more ionic monomers that are oppositely charged from the monomers of (a); adding stepwise, a fourth amount of the polymerization initiator to react any residual monomer, and (e) neutralizing the resulting polymer blend. Also claimed are heterogeneous polymer blends containing polymers formed from one or more anionic, cationic, and non-ionic monomers, either polymerized in situ or separately and then combined. Also claimed are methods for increasing the filler content of paper or paperboard, which methods comprises (a) combining the heterogeneous polymer blend with a precipitated calcium carbonate filler; (b) combining the resulting mixture with a pulp slurry; and (c) processing the resulting slurry mixture to form a sheet of paper or paperboard. Finally, also claimed are methods of increasing the filler content of paper or paperboard, which method comprises (1) combining either the heterogeneous blend or the precipitated calcium carbonate filler with a pulp slurry, (2) combining the remaining component with the pulp slurry; and (c) processing the resulting pulp slurry mixture to form a sheet of paper or paperboard.

Copolymer blend compositions for use to increase paper filler content

A hydrophobic filler material for neutral, alkaline and acidic papers is disclosed. The filler material comprises finely divided particles of an inorganic material, in admixture with a water miscible, butyl acrylate-acrylonitrile copolymer. A neutral or alkaline paper is disclosed. The neutral or alkaline paper comprises a hydrophobic filler material comprising inorganic material, in admixture with a water miscible, butyl acrylate-acrylonitrile copolymer. A method for improving sizing characteristics of neutral or alkaline paper is disclosed, comprising preparing a filler material and adding the same to cellulose fiber. The filler material is prepared by selecting particles of an inorganic material and admixing with a water miscible, butyl acrylate-acrylonitrile copolymer, forming a hydrophobic system.

Surface modified fillers for sizing paper

A hydrophobic filler material for alkaline paper is disclosed. The filler material comprises finely divided particles of an inorganic material, a majority of particles having a surface all of which is substantially modified with a water soluble C.sub.12 -C.sub.22 fatty acid salt and a metal ion in an amount at least effective to complex all of the fatty acid salt present. An alkaline paper is disclosed. The alkaline paper comprises a hydrophobic filler material comprising finely divided inorganic material, a majority of particles having substantially all of their surface being modified with a water soluble C.sub.22 fatty acid salt. A method for improving sizing of alkaline paper is disclosed, comprising preparing a filler material and adding the same to cellulose fiber. The filler material is prepared by selecting finely divided particles of an inorganic material and substantially modifying all of the surface of a majority of the particles with a C.sub.12 -C.sub.22 fatty acid salt, forming a hydrophobic coating thereon.

A hydrophobic filler material for alkaline paper is disclosed. The filler material comprises finely divided particles of an inorganic material, a majority of particles having a surface all of which is substantially modified with a water soluble C.sub.12 -C.sub.22 fatty acid salt and a metal ion in an amount at least effective to complex all of the fatty acid salt present. An alkaline paper is disclosed. The alkaline paper comprises a hydrophobic filler material comprising finely divided inorganic material, a majority of particles having substantially all of their surface being modified with a water soluble C.sub.12 -C.sub.22 fatty acid salt. A method for improving sizing of alkaline paper is disclosed, comprising preparing a filler material and adding the same to cellulose fiber. The filler material is prepared by selecting finely divided particles of an inorganic material and substantially modifying all of the surface of a majority of the particles with a C.sub.12 -C.sub.22 fatty acid salt, forming a hydrophobic coating thereon.

Material, such as natural ground and precipitated calcium carbonate, when modified by surface-treatment with a cationic polymer, has been discovered to be highly effective as a filler material in the making of paper. Utilization of this type of filler material greatly improves the papermaking process by reducing the usage of wet end sizing agent, improving opacity, improving filler retention in the furnish, and causing better drainage on the papermachine, all of which result in the production of a high quality paper having excellent opacity and tensile strength characteristics. The nature of the polymer-modified filler material, the process for its preparation and the method of its use in papermaking are disclosed.

Cationic polymer-modified filler material, process for its prepartion

A two component binder system comprising a highly dispersible, high specific surface area precipitated calcium carbonate (colloidal PCC) and a cationic starch, especially a cationic potato starch, for improving filler retention, opacity and strength during papermaking.

Precipitated calcium carbonate-cationic starch binder as retention aid

A method of forming an air laid web of hydrogen bonded wood pulp fibers is disclosed. More specifically, a paper producing method is disclosed wherein microencapsulated hydrogen bond promoting material is thoroughly premixed with wood pulp fibers. The mixture is then air laid on a moving screen to form a three dimensional continuum. The microcapsules may then be ruptured by heat and/or pressure to release the hydrogen bond promoting material evenly throughout the continuum. The continuum may then be heated or pressed to further consolidate the web.
