A process chamber for making composite structures using CVI/CVD is provided. The process chamber has a plurality of compartments. Each compartment has its own equipment such as, for example, a substrate support structure, a gas inlet, a gas outlet, a cooling element and a heating element, and control system for independently controlling the process conditions for treating a substrate contained within.

A friction disk may comprise a friction disk core and a wear liner coupled to the friction disk core. A depression may be formed in a surface of the friction disk core. The wear liner may comprise a protrusion extending from a non-wear surface of the wear liner. The protrusion may be positioned within the depression of the friction disk core.

A carbon/carbon part and processes for making carbon/carbon parts are provided. The process involves forming steps, carbonization steps and densification steps. The forming steps may include needling fibrous layers to form fibers that extend in three directions. Pressure may be applied to a fibrous preform at an elevated temperature to increase the fiber volume ratio of the fibrous preform. The densification steps may include filling the voids or pores of the fibrous preform with a carbon matrix.

A method for forming a fibrous three dimensional structure comprises providing a first fibrous layer, wherein the first fibrous layer is aligned in the machine direction. At least one additional fibrous layer is superposed with the first fibrous layer, wherein the direction of alignment of the at least one additional fibrous layer is at an acute angle to the machine direction. The first fibrous layer and the at least one additional fibrous layer are needled together at a needle density of greater than approximately 55 needle punches per square centimeter, forming a first combined fibrous mat. The combined fibrous mat is superposed with at least one additional combined fibrous mat and needled at a needle density of less than approximately 60 needle punches per square centimeter, forming a fibrous three dimensional structure.

The invention relates to a susceptor lid for use in a CVI/CVD furnace. More specifically, the invention is directed to a lid configured to consecutively run CVI/CVD and heat treatment processes without opening the furnace. The susceptor lid according to the invention comprises: a susceptor lid body having a gas exhaust hole, the susceptor lid body having a top surface and a bottom surface; and an exhaust lid disposed over the gas exhaust hole, with a clearance between the exhaust lid and the gas exhaust hole such that exhaust gas pressure within the clearance is approximately equal to, or less than the exhaust gas pressure within the gas exhaust hole, the exhaust lid being positioned to block the majority of the radiation from below the bottom surface of the susceptor lid body.

This invention relates to carbon--carbon (C--C) composite comprising carbon fibers or carbon fabric, carbon char on the carbon fiber or fabric and pyrolytic carbon on the carbon char, wherein the density of the carbon composite is at least 1.3 g/cc. The invention also relates to wet friction elements and power transmission devises containing the same. The invention also relates to methods of preparing the carbon--carbon (C--C) composites. These C--C composites and wet friction elements and power transmission devises made therefrom have improved friction properties desired by wet brakes and clutches. These C--C composites provide improvements in cost, and when run against metals, such as steel or iron, improvements in wear and frictional behavior compared to known C--C composites for wet friction applications. In one aspect, the carbon--carbon does not require bonding to a metal backing or core material.
