A stapler includes a body and a strike plate movably mounted to the body between a rest position and a loaded position. The strike plate is adapted to drive a staple into a target object. The strike plate may be moved from the rest position to the loaded position by a loading mechanism against the bias of a power spring, whereupon the energy stored in the power spring is applied to the strike plate to drive the staple. A stapler may include a lockout which inhibits movement of the strike plate toward the loaded position unless a work piece is beneath the stapler body.

A bar code reader has an integrated scanning component module which is mountable on a printed circuit board. In one embodiment, the module may include the digitizer/decoder electronics, enabling the module to be used with a generic PCB. In some embodiments, the module includes a high speed optical scanning arrangement having an optical element which extends longitudinally of a flexible member, secured at one end. In other embodiments, the invention extends to a hand-held optical scanner having a scanning assembly, detector and data transmission coupling all mounted to a common printed circuit board, preferably located within a manually-graspable handle. In yet a further embodiment, an abuse-detector or accelerometer is provided for determining when the device is exposed to deceleration above a predetermined limit, and optionally for automatically shutting down applications programs and for providing a black-box-record of a short time frame before the device was exposed to an unexpected shock. Preferably, the reader is shock protected by a thermo-plastic elastomer housing section. An outgoing light beam is directed at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the PCB.

Various optical components of an electro-optical system for reading coded indicia are mounted on a chassis snap-mounted in a housing. The optical components are supported by the chassis at an elevation relative to a printed circuit board snap-mounted to the chassis. The optical components are automatically adjusted in a test fixture.

A battery-powered device, especially a hand-held, data collection terminal having an electro-optical scanner, includes a main housing, a battery pack separate from the main housing, and a latching mechanism for latching the battery pack in its assembled position on the main housing in which it is partially received in a correspondingly configured receiving recess of the main housing. Electrical circuitry in the device is shut down prior to battery pack removal. During idle periods, the device is supported on a cradle, with a back or handle portion of the device being received in a main compartment of the cradle. The cradle also includes an auxiliary compartment for receiving the battery pack for recharging the same. A hook-shaped projection of the cradle engages behind a detaining wall of the housing and is held in position by a shuttle that, in its locking position, is interposed between such projection and an unyieldable portion of the housing and is locked in place by a padlock passing through aligned openings of the shuttle and of the cradle.

A light emitter emits light through an offset opening in a concave collector to a reflector that reflects the light along a first path to coded indicia to be read in an electro-optical reader. Light reflected from the indicia is reflected by the reflector to the collector which, in turn, directs the reflected light in a second path extending across the first path to a light detector. The reflector is mounted on a resilient spring for oscillating movement.

A battery-powered device (10), especially a hand-held, data collection terminal having an electro-optical scanner, includes a housing (11), a battery pack (12) separate from the housing (11), and a latching mechanism (18) for latching the battery pack (12) in its assembled position on the housing (11) in which it is partially received in a receiving recess (17) of the housing (11). The mechanism (18) includes a slidable latching member (19) with a portion (33) for engaging the recess (17) in the battery pack (12) and a locking button (20) that is transversely movable into position to retain the latching member (19) in its recess engaging position. Electrical circuitry in the device is shut down prior to battery pack removal by movement of the locking button (20) to effect release of the latching member (19) and to operate a power shut-down switch (34). In another embodiment, a battery compartment door (112) is used to operate a shut-down switch (134). During idle periods, the device (10) is supported on a cradle (40), with a portion of the device being received in a main compartment (41) of the cradle (40). The cradle (40) also includes an auxiliary compartment (49) for receiving the battery pack (12) for recharging the same. A hook-shaped projection (53) of the cradle engages behind a detaining wall (52) of the housing (11) and is held in position by a shuttle (70) that, in its locking position, is interposed between such projection (53) and an unyieldable portion (56) of the housing and is locked in place by a padlock passing through aligned openings (74, 55) of the shuttle (70) and of the cradle (40).

An electro-optical scanning device reads indicia having parts of different light reflectivity, including bar codes and matrix arrays such as UPSCODES. The scanning device includes laser or light emitting diodes for emitting at least two light beams of the same or different wavelengths. The light beams may be visible to the human eye, and the beams are optically directed to form one or two scan lines to scan portions of a symbol. Dual photosensor(s) or a charge coupled device detects light reflected from the different portions of the symbol. The charge coupled device can be used to detect either reflected ambient light or the reflected visible light from the beams emitted by the diodes. The photosensors generate signals corresponding to the detected light which can be processed simultaneously. The device is particularly useful in reading two dimensional or more complex symbols. Methods for reading indicia are also described.

A scanner module for use in a bar code reader has a scanning mirror which is mounted to a bracket by way of leaf-spring, allowing the mirror to oscillate in one direction. The bracket is hung from a stationary chassis by means of two strips of mylar film, allowing the entire bracket to oscillate in the perpendicular direction, thereby providing two dimensional oscillation of the mirror and raster scanning of a light beam reflected from the mirror. The mylar sheets are protected against mechanical shock by pins which pass through holes in the bracket. The pins are slightly smaller than the holes, allowing sufficient clearance for movement of the bracket during normal operation, but preventing too much stress being placed upon the mylar films if the module is dropped. The pins also provide accurate alignment of the bracket with respect to the chassis.

A wall-mounted, hands-free scanner capable of having its field of view adjusted using a pivot structure with a position-holding mechanism. The spacing of the field of view from the wall can be quickly adjusted to accommodate different size objects and different placement of indicia on objects. The scanner includes a base member configured to be installed on a vertical surface, a scanning unit including a light scanning source directing a light beam across a field of view toward an indicia located within the field of view, a pivot structure connecting the scanning unit to the base member (the pivot structure having a generally horizontal axis of rotation about which the scanning unit rotates relative to the base member), and a position-holding mechanism within the pivot structure. The scanning unit may be rotated relative to the base member to adjust the spacing of the field of view from the vertical surface, and the position-holding mechanism within the pivot structure maintains the scanning unit at a selected angular position. No tightening or other position-holding step is required following adjustment of angular position.
