Described are crystalline block copolymers displaying high glass transition temperatures, excellent mechanical properties, excellent chemical and thermal stability, and good melt processability. These block polymers contain segments of crystalline poly(aryl ether ketones).

Described herein are isomorphic blends of poly(phenylene oxide) and poly(aryl ether ketones) having less than about 30 mole percent and preferably less than about 25 mole percent of keto groups based on the total keto and ether groups. Described herein are amorphous thermoplastic terpolymers containing units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, or C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 cycloalkyl, X' is independently ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.9 alkyl; ##STR3## wherein R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl and a.sub.1 is an integer of 2 to 7; --S--, --O--, or ##STR4## a is an integer of 0 to 4 and n is independently an integer of 1 to 3. The units are attached to each other by an --0-- bond. These polymers have an excellent combination of mechanical properties. They display high notched izod impact values, high heat distortion temperatures and excellent environmental stress crack resistance.

Described herein are poly(aryl ether ketones) derived from biphenol which can be improved by incorporating bisphenol comonomers. The resulting polymers have lower melting points while the Tg is essentially unchanged resulting in good mechanical and crystallization properties.
