A novel sorptive clay product is formed by treating attapulgite clay with sodium silicate and heating to expel moisture such that the product contains about 7-20% total volatile matter. Acid may also be added such that the pH of aqueous slurry is in the range 5 to 10. This sorptive clay product exhibits water and oil absorption and resistance to wet breakdown equivalent to higher-temperature activated attapulgite products.

Sorptive clay composition and method of manufacture

Bauxite fines, preferably uncalcined, are mixed with an acid anion-containing alumina hydrosol having an aluminum/acid anion ratio in the range of from about 0.5:1 to about 2:1. The mixture is formed into particles by extrusion and then dried and calcined.

Production of sulfur recovery catalyst from bauxite fines

An insolubilized mineral-supported enzyme composite having outstanding catalytic activity and mechanical stability comprises an enzyme covalently attached to silanized porous, attrition-resistant granules of heat-activated attapulgite clay.
