Whether testing intrusion detection systems, conducting training exercises, or creating data sets to be used by the broader cybersecurity community, realistic user behavior is a desirable component of a cyber-range. Existing methods either rely on network level data or replay recorded user actions to approximate real users in a network. Probabilistic models can be fit to actual user data (sequences of application usage) collected from endpoints. Once trained to the user's behavioral data, these models can generate novel sequences of actions from the same distribution as the training data. These sequences of actions can be fed to emulator software via configuration files, which replicate those behaviors on end devices. The models are platform agnostic and can generate behavior data for any emulation software package. In some embodiments a latent variable is added to faithfully capture and leverage time-of-day trends.

Data driven computer user emulation

A system and method for intrusion detection on automotive controller area networks. The system and method can detect various CAN attacks, such as attacks that cause unintended acceleration, deactivation of vehicle's brakes, or steering the vehicle. The system and method detects changes in nuanced correlations of CAN timeseries signals and how they cluster together. The system reverse engineers CAN signals and detect masquerade attacks by analyzing timeseries extracted from raw CAN frames. Specifically, anomalies in the CAN data can be detected by computing timeseries clustering similarity using hierarchical clustering on the vehicle's CAN signals and comparing the clustering similarity across CAN captures with and without attacks.

Universally applicable signal-based controller area network (CAN) intrusion detection system

A system for decoding an unknown automotive controller area network ('CAN') message definitions. CAN data vehicle signal mappings are typically held in secret and varied by automotive model and year. Without knowledge of the mappings, the wealth of real-time vehicle data hidden in the automotive CAN packets is uninterpretable—impeding research, after-market tuning, efficiency and performance monitoring, fault diagnosis, and privacy-related technologies. This system can ascertain the CAN signals' boundaries (start bit and length), endianness (byte ordering), signedness (binary-to-integer encoding) from raw CAN data. This allows conversion of CAN data to time series. Interpreting the translated CAN data's physical meaning and finding a linear mapping to standard units (e.g., knowing the signal is speed and scaling values to represent units of miles per hour) can be achieved for many signals by leveraging diagnostic standards to obtain real-time measurements of in-vehicle systems. The system can be integrated into lightweight hardware enabling an OBD-II plugin for real-time in-vehicle CAN decoding or run on standard computers. The system can output a standard DBC file with the signal definition information.

Controller area network decoder (CAN-D)

A system is described for receiving a stream of events and scoring the events based on anomalousness and maliciousness (or other classification). The system can include a plurality of anomaly detectors that together implement an algorithm to identify low-probability events and detect atypical traffic patterns. The anomaly detector provides for comparability of disparate sources of data (e.g., network flow data and firewall logs.) Additionally, the anomaly detector allows for regulatability, meaning that the algorithm can be user configurable to adjust a number of false alerts. The anomaly detector can be used for a variety of probability density functions, including normal Gaussian distributions, irregular distributions, as well as functions associated with continuous or discrete variables.
