Method and apparatus for treating dishware, in which the method comprises the steps of providing a treatment composition comprising a photoactive component, contacting in an appliance the treatment composition with the dishware, and irradiating the treatment composition with visible light. The step of irradiating the treatment composition with visible light is performed with a source of light that is tool free insertable into and removable from the appliance.

Method for treating dishware

Photoactivators comprise a photoactive moiety and a hydrophilic moiety. The photoactivators preferably comprise less than about 35%, by weight of the photoactivator, of the photoactive moiety. The photoactivators can be activated to a photo-excited state by excitation with incident radiation of a wavelength between about 350 nm and 750 nm, preferably between about 350 nm and about 420 nm. The photoactivators further encompass those having certain chemical formulations.

Photoactivators

A cleaning composition may comprise a pH-switchable sudsing system and a cleansing system. The pH-switchable sudsing system may comprise a primary sudsing agent in combination with a pH-switchable co-surfactant. The pH-switchable co-surfactant is selected from diamine molecules having a general formula RR&#x2014;N&#x2014;R&#x2014;N(CH)X, where Ris a linear or branched Cto Chydrocarbyl, Ris a linear or branched Cto Chydrocarbyl, Ris a linear or branched Cto Chydrocarbylene, and X is a counteranion. The tertiary amine nitrogen of the pH-switchable co-surfactant has a pKvalue. When the tertiary amine nitrogen is unprotonated, the pH-switchable co-surfactant may provide a suds-boosting effect in washing solutions at a washing pH above the pK. When the tertiary amine nitrogen is protonated, the pH-switchable co-surfactant may provide a suds-reducing benefit in rinse waters at a rinse pH below the pK.
