The invention relates to a method of making an aqueous coating composition comprising a blend of at least a first aqueous polymer dispersion and a second aqueous polymer dispersion comprising a film-forming second polymer wherein the first aqueous polymer dispersion comprises a first polymer having a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from 2000 to 120000, an acid value of 30 to 150 mg KOH/g, a glass transition temperature Tg of at least 20&#xb0; C. as calculated with the Fox formula, and an ethylene-oxide content of from 1 to 20 wt %, the method comprising blending an aqueous dispersion of the first polymer having a solids content of 25 to 50 wt % and a pH of 4.5 to 8.0 with an aqueous dispersion of the second polymer having a solids content of 25 to 55 wt % and a pH of 4.5 to 8.0.

Waterborne coating composition

The invention relates to an aqueous dispersion for use as open time improver in a coating composition which aqueous polymer dispersion comprises a first polymer having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 2,000 to 120,000 (determined by gel permeation chromatography using a mixture of tetrahydrofurane and acetic acid as eluent), an acid value of from 30 to 150 mg KOH/g, and an ethylene-oxide wt % (on total solid polymer) of from 1 to 20 wt %, said first polymer dispersion being obtainable by free radical polymerization of a monomer mixture in the presence of at least one free-radical initiator and at least one surfactant, said monomer mixture comprising: a) 5 to 20 wt %, preferably 7 to 10 wt %, acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers or precursors thereof or ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising ionic group precursors; b) 5 to 25 wt %, preferably 7 to 20 wt %, ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing polyethylene oxide, polyethylene glycol or mono-alkoxypolyethylene glycol moeity c) up to 90 wt % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers other than a) or b); d) 0 to 10 wt % ethylenically unsaturated monomers with a functional group for cross-linking e) 0 to 10 wt % of chain transfer agents; f) up to 90 wt % non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers other than c), wherein 30 to 90 wt %, more preferably 60 to 80 wt % comprise crosslinkable groups or precursors thereof; wherein the sum of a) through f) is 100 wt %. The invention further relates to a method for making the first polymer dispersion, the use of said aqueous dispersion as an open time improver in a coating composition, to aqueous coating compositions comprising a blend of at least a first aqueous polymer dispersion and a second aqueous polymer dispersion comprising a film-forming second polymer and to a method for making said coating composition.

The process for the manufacture of an auto-oxidatively cross-linking hybrid polymer, in particular an aqueous hybrid polymer dispersion, comprises the step of reacting in a mini-emulsion process one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers to form an addition polymer in the presence of a modified auto-oxidatively crosslinkable (AOC) polymer which has been modified with terminal unsaturated groups of the formula &#x2014;C(R1)&#x2550;CH2 wherein R1 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and wherein the AOC polymer is a hydrophobic polymer having an acid number between 5 to 30. The resulting aqueous hybrid polymer dispersion can be used for the manufacture of coating compositions, ink compositions or adhesives and coating compositions comprising the hybrid polymer dispersion as a binder.

Waterborne hybrid polymer dispersion

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions having good film forming properties, good stability and in can clarity, to the polymer dispersions obtainable by the process and coating compositions prepared from said polymer dispersions and the use thereof. The process comprising, (1) a first polymerization step comprising (1a) preparing an emulsion (1A) in water of a first monomer mixture (1a1) comprising carboxylic acid functional monomers, a surfactant (1a2) and water soluble inorganic salt (1a3) wherein surfactant (1a2) is a sulfur based anionic surfactant containing less than 60 wt % ethylene oxide and wherein the salt (1a3) content at the start of polymerization (1b) is between 0.01 and 3 gr/kg water, (1b) emulsion polymerizing the obtained emulsion 1A forming a hydroplasticizable first stage polymer particle dispersion (1B) said first stage polymer having a Tg from 10 to 125&#xb0;, (2) a second polymerization step comprising (2a) adding to dispersion 1B a second monomer mixture (2a1) wherein carboxylic acid functional monomers is present in an amount such that the acid value of the resulting polymer is less than 23 KOH/g and wherein the amount of monomer mixture (2a1) is between 10 and 90 wt % of the total weight of monomers (1a1) plus (2a1), (2b) polymerizing second monomer mixture (2a1) to form a second stage polymer in the first particle dispersion (1B) to form a multiphase particle dispersion (2B).
