A file division and erasure code application executing in a controlling computational device generates data fragments and parity fragments of a file. Each of the generated data fragments and parity fragments are distributed in a different distributed computational device of a plurality of distributed computational devices, where distributing of a generated data fragment comprises determining whether any distributed computational device already stores a duplicate copy of the generated data fragment, and if any distributed computational device already stores the duplicate copy of the generated data fragment, placing the generated data fragment in the distributed computational device if no other data or parity fragment of the file has already been placed in the distributed computational device.

Placement of data fragments generated by an erasure code in distributed computational devices based on a deduplication factor

A computing environment includes a home site and a cache site with nonhomogeneous thin-provisioned storage configurations. A file management system updates files stored at the cache site. Each updated file has an updated file size and a pre-update file size. When a resynchronization is needed between the cache site and the home site, for example due to an extended communication failure, the storage requirement changes for the updated files are calculated and a notification is sent to the home site. The notification identifies the updated files and the storage requirement changes. The home site sends a reply to the cache site. The reply identifies which files are approved for immediate processing. The cache site transfers resynchronization data for the approved files to the home site, and delays transferring resynchronization data for the unapproved files until subsequent replies from the home site indicate that the previously unapproved files are now approved.

File management in thin provisioning storage environments

A request to monitor a data packet to be transmitted from a first location to a second location over a first network is received. A projected time for the transmission of the data packet from the first location to the second location is determined. Responsive to determining the projected time, whether the data packet arrived at the second location after the projected time plus a variance is determined.

A method and associated systems for a deduplication module of a database-management system. The database-management system, upon receiving a request to perform a transaction that will revise a stored database record, uses memory-resident logs and previously generated database-maintenance tables to: i) identify a first logical block that identifies an updated value, stored in a physical block of storage, to be used to update the database record; and ii) further identify a second logical block that stores in the database a corresponding existing value of the same record. After determining that the first and second logical blocks reside on physical storage devices within the same storage tier, the system directs the deduplication module to associate both logical blocks with the first physical block.

High-efficiency deduplication module of a database-management system

The present invention relates to a method, system, and computer program product for determining storage device weight values to use to select one of the storage devices to use as a target storage to which data from a source storage is migrated. A determination is made, for each of the storage devices, of static parameter values for static parameters comprising attributes of the storage device and dynamic parameter values for dynamic parameters providing device health information determined by accessing the storage device to determine operational conditions at the storage device. Storage device weight values are determined as a function of the static parameter values and the dynamic parameter values of the device. The determined storage device weight values are used to select one of the storage devices as the target storage to which data from the source storage is migrated.

A hierarchal storage management method is provided. The method includes detecting a first portion of a first file being deleted from a hybrid storage device including a hard disk drive (HDD) memory device, a solid state drive (SSD) memory device, and an archival storage memory device. A first set of memory blocks associated with the first portion of the first file is identified. The first set of memory blocks are determined to reside on the SSD memory device. In response, the first set of memory blocks are transferred from the SSD memory device to a first portion of the hybrid storage device.

Tier based data file management

In one embodiment, a method includes determining a home node that corresponds to gateway (GW) nodes in a clustered file system, each GW node being eligible to process one or more read tasks, determining a peer GW eligibility value for more than one of the GW nodes in the clustered file system eligible to process one or more read tasks, and determining a single GW node from amongst the GW nodes having a highest peer GW eligibility value for each home node. Additionally, the method includes assigning and defining a size for one or more read task items for the GW nodes having the highest peer GW eligibility value for multiple home nodes based on a current dynamic profile of the GW nodes, and distributing workload to the GW nodes according to the size for each of the one or more read task items assigned to the GW nodes.

Parallel I/O read processing for use in clustered file systems having cache storage

Methods, systems, and computer program products are provided for performing a secure delete operation in a wide area network (WAN) including a cache site and a home site. A method includes identifying a file for deletion at the cache site, determining whether the file has a copy stored at the home site, detecting a location of the copy at the home site prior to a disconnection event of the cache site from the home site, deleting the file from the cache site during the disconnection event, and in response to the secure deletion of the file not being complete during the disconnection event, indicating on a table a remote inode number assigned to the copy associated with the file at the home site, a name under which the copy is saved, and a list of data chunk tuples specifying selected data of the copy to undergo secure deletion.

Secure deletion operations in a wide area network

In one embodiment, a method includes monitoring data usage on a per-extent basis for data stored to a first location in a first tier of a multi-tier file system and data stored to a second location in a second tier of the multi-tier file system. The method also includes swapping data usage statistics for the data stored to the first location with data usage statistics for data stored to the second location in response to a determination that data usage of the data stored to the second location is not accounted for in the data usage statistics for the data stored in the first location after a first portion of the data stored to the first location is swapped with a second portion of the data stored to the second location. Moreover, data blocks which are swapped within a same extent do not have data usage statistics thereof swapped.

Handling data block migration to efficiently utilize higher performance tiers in a multi-tier storage environment

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a list of applications that are anticipated to access a given data block within a time window with an anticipated future access count for each anticipated application. The method also includes determining that a block application access weight is greater than a block application access threshold, the block application access weight being based at least in part on the anticipated future access count for each anticipated application. The method further includes determining that a cache profile weight for the given data block is greater than zero contingent upon the block application access weight being greater than the block application access threshold. Moreover, the method includes sending the cache profile weight to a file system contingent upon the cache profile weight being greater than zero. Other methods, systems, and computer program products are described in accordance with more embodiments.

Multi-tier file storage management using file access and cache profile information

An approach is provided for operating a mobile device having first and second operating systems (OSs) installed. While executing the first OS but not the second OS and based on battery power remaining in the mobile device being less than a threshold and the mobile device consuming less power if executing the second OS but not the first OS, execution of the first OS is terminated and the second OS is executed. While executing the second OS, and in response to a determination of a likelihood of the mobile device being subject to an external security attack in a geographic region in which the mobile device is located and a determination that the mobile device is more secure against the external security attack while executing the first OS than while executing the second OS, execution of the second OS is terminated and the first OS is executed.

Enhanced security and resource utilization in a multi-operating system environment

A mechanism is provided in a data processing system for de-duplication aware secure delete. Responsive to receiving a secure delete request for a file, the mechanism identifies a list of file blocks to be securely deleted from a physical disk device. Responsive to determining at least one virtual block of another file refers to a given disk block corresponding to a file block in the list, the mechanism copies the given disk block to generate a copied disk block in the physical disk device and updates a pointer of the at least one virtual block to refer to the copied disk block. The mechanism writes a secure delete pattern for each file block in the list of file blocks to a disk block in the physical disk device without performing de-duplication processing.

De-duplication aware secure delete

An approach is provided for operating a mobile device having first and second operating systems (OSs) installed. While the mobile device is executing the first OS but not the second OS, (1) based in part on battery power remaining in the mobile device being less than a threshold and a lower power consumption of the mobile device if executing the second OS but not the first OS, execution of the first OS is terminated and the second OS is executed in the mobile device; and/or (2) based in part on (a) the mobile device being currently located in the first geographic region which has a greater likelihood of attack on the mobile device, and (b) the mobile device being more secure while operating the second OS but not the first OS, execution of the first OS is terminated and the second OS is executed in the mobile device.
