A method for conducting a partial stroke test of an emergency shutdown valve includes receiving a request to initiate the partial stroke test from a user interface or another source, establishing a direct or an indirect wireless communication link with the emergency shutdown valve, and generating one or more commands of a digital industrial automation protocol to be transmitted to the emergency shutdown valve via the wireless communication link, so that a partial stroke test of the emergency shutdown valve is initiated in response to these commands.

Method and apparatus for partial stroke testing of an emergency shutdown valve

A device intended to meet flameproof approval requirements is configured to have two compartments separated by an energy-limiting barrier. The first compartment of the device houses the wiring terminations that bear ignition-capable energy and, therefore, must be flameproof. The energy-limiting barrier is configured to limit the energy that can reach the second compartment to a level that is not ignition capable. This allows the second compartment to be safe without meeting the flameproof requirements, and allows user-interface elements such as switches and indicators to be designed in a more cost-effective manner.

An emergency shutdown test system, wherein the emergency shutdown test system includes an emergency shutdown device controller and sensors to provide data to the controller, the controller having a processor, a memory coupled to the processor and an auxiliary input, wherein an emergency shutdown test is stored in the memory, and the auxiliary input is adapted to receive a binary signal and sensor data. Routines are stored in the memory and are adapted to be executed on the processor to cause the emergency shutdown test to be performed in response to the receipt of the binary signal at the auxiliary input and to cause sensor data to be recorded in the memory during the emergency shutdown test.

System to manually initiate an emergency shutdown test and collect diagnostic data in a process control environment

A process control or safety system within a process plant uses one or more testing blocks to effect the timely and safe operation of on-line testing routines within field devices, such as valves, used in the process control or safety system. These testing blocks, which are easy to implement and to place in the process control or safety system, enable the periodic or on-demand testing of field devices to be integrated into the normal and on-going operation of the process control or safety system without causing scheduling or connection problems and without the need to rely on maintenance or other personnel, thereby providing better monitoring of the operational status of the field devices used within the process control and safety systems. This functionality is especially important in safety systems, in which it is desirable to timely monitor or assess the operational status of the devices used to shut the process down when an unsafe condition arises, so as to assure that initiation of a shut down by the safety system actually results in a shut down of the system.

A control device test system including an electrical switch and a device controller, wherein the device controller has a processor, a memory coupled to the processor, and an auxiliary input coupled to the processor and adapted to receive a binary signal from the electrical switch. A routine is stored in the memory of the processor and is adapted to be executed on the processor to cause a control device test to be performed in response to the receipt of the binary signal at the input.
