A calender in a paper or board machine comprises a calender frame, at least two soft-faced rolls mounted on the calender frame and at least one hard roll mounted on the calender frame in a manner that allows the hard roll to be displaced between a first position in which it forms calendering nips with the two soft-faced rolls and a second position in which it is spaced from the soft-faced rolls. During threading of the web; while the calender is in operation, the hard roll is shifted to its second position, the web is passed over the soft-faced rolls, and the hard roll is shifted back to its first position and brings the web into the nips between the hard roll and the soft-faced rolls.

In a tissue paper making machine, a method for dewatering a tissue web without wet pressing and transferring the web onto a flow through drying cylinder including conducting a tissue web onto a pick-up fabric formed of felt and dewatering the web, without wet pressing, into the pick-up felt through the application of suction and capillary forces until the web has sufficient dry matter content to be passed to a flow through drying cylinder. The web is transferred to a flow through wire which passes over the web carrying pick-up felt at a suction roller by the application of suction over a narrow zone, the web being secured to the flow through wire by the application of additional suction over a broader suction zone.

Method for dewatering a tissue web

A machine for manufacturing paper, such as tissue paper, includes a twin-wire former made up of a rotary forming roll and a pair of endless fabrics, each of which may be a wire or felt, lapped around the rotary forming roll to provide twin-wire web formation therewith. At the location where these endless fabrics travel beyond the forming roll they diverge from each other to define between themselves a diverging space where one of the endless fabrics has an upwardly directed surface on which the web is carried beyond the forming roll. This latter endless fabric carries the web to a press section where this latter endless fabric travels with the web through a first press nip of the press section defined between an inner press roll situated within the loop of the latter endless fabric and an outer press roll situated outside of the latter loop. This outer press roll is lapped by an additional endless fabric structure so that the web is situated at the first press nip between the latter additional fabric structure and the endless fabric which carries the web away from the forming roll. The web travels with the additional fabric structure around the outer press roll, to become detached from the endless fabric which carries the web away from the forming roll, and this outer press roll cooperates with a drying cylinder of a drying section of the paper machine to define therewith at least a second press nip.
