Arrangement and method for a power bus

A converter circuitry between a first network, which may be either a poly-phase medium-voltage alternating current (AC) network, at least one polyphase low-voltage AC network or at least one direct-current (DC) network, and a second network, which may be either a polyphase medium-voltage AC network or a medium-voltage DC network, wherein the converter circuitry comprises at least one power bus and low-voltage power cells both at the first and at the second network side such that each power cell is connected to a power bus via a transformer. Each power bus is connected to a low-voltage power unit, which is able to supply pre-charging power via the power bus to all power cell intermediate DC-link filtering capacitors before the converter is started. The low-voltage power unit is also able to take care of a resistor braking in case the first network cannot take the power supplied by the load connected to the second network.

One exemplary embodiment is a power system for an active magnetic bearing including at least one power amplifier. Each power amplifier includes a first semiconductor device including a first node coupled to a neutral point node and a second node, a second output node coupled to the neutral point node, a second semiconductor device including a first node coupled to the second node of the first semiconductor device and a second node coupled to a first output node, a third semiconductor device including a first node coupled to a first DC bus node and a second node coupled to the first output node, and a fourth semiconductor device including a first node coupled to a second DC bus node and a second node coupled to the second node of the first semiconductor device.

Power amplifier

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of active magnetic bearing control systems are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a power converter electrically coupled to an active magnetic bearing (AMB) having a plurality of windings, the power converter comprising a DC bus, two capacitors, a first leg, a second leg, and a controller. The capacitors are electrically coupled in series between the positive rail and negative rail, one capacitor being electrically coupled to the other capacitor at a midpoint connection. The first leg comprises a first semiconductor switching device and a first output node. The second leg comprises a second semiconductor switching device and a second output node. The first output node is electrically coupled to the midpoint connection by way of a first AMB winding and the second output node is electrically coupled to the midpoint connection by way of a second AMB winding.

An arrangement and method for monitoring a frequency converter, the frequency converter being a voltage-controlled PWM frequency converter provided with a control unit and having an uncontrolled or a main-frequency controlled main bridge connectable to an alternating-current source (U, U, U), a direct-voltage intermediate circuit and a controlled load bridge for producing a variable-frequency multi-phase output voltage (U, U, U), which direct-voltage intermediate circuit of the frequency converter is provided with a small-capacitance direct-voltage capacitor, the main bridge being connected to the load bridge directly without a large-capacitance direct-voltage capacitor functioning as an intermediate energy storage, and the arrangement includes a measuring unit for measuring the direct voltage of the intermediate voltage circuit. In the arrangement, the measuring unit measures at least one quantity of the intermediate-circuit direct voltage, and the control unit determines on the basis of the aforesaid quantity at least one input voltage value and/or a failure situation of the frequency converter or its load circuit.

Arrangement for monitoring a frequency converter

An overvoltage protection system for the intermediate circuit of frequency converter, said frequency converter being a voltage-controlled PWM-frequency converter comprising an uncontrolled mains bridge () to be connected to an alternating-current source (U, U, U), a direct-voltage intermediate circuit and a controlled load bridge () for producing a multi-phase alternating voltage (U, U, U) of variable frequency, wherein the direct-voltage circuit of the frequency converter contains a low-capacitance direct-voltage capacitor, the mains bridge () being connected to the load bridge () directly without a high-capacitance direct-voltage capacitor serving as an intermediate energy storage, and which overvoltage protection system contains a varistor (R). The overvoltage protection system consists of a series connection of the varistor (R) and a semiconductor switch (V), said series connection being connected in parallel with the direct-voltage capacitor, which semiconductor switch has a voltage rating lower than the normal operating level of the direct-voltage intermediate circuit.

Overvoltage protection of a frequency converter

A method and a system for measuring a quantity, such as current, of a power converter apparatus including parallel-connected power converter units. A component quantity, of each power converter unit is measured, transmitted digitally in serial communication format to a control unit (CU), and summed to produce a summed quantity. The component quantity data are transmitted to the control unit with the least significant bit (LSB) first. The summing is started as soon as the LSBs of the component quantities have been received. The LSB of the sum is transmitted further as soon as the LSBs of the component quantities have been summed. After this, the rest of the bits are summed in the order of arrival, with the most significant bit (MSB) last. The respective summing data are transmitted further in the order of arrival as soon as the corresponding bits of the component quantities have been summed.

Measuring method and arrangement

A method and an apparatus for charging a filtering capacitor in the direct-voltage intermediate circuit of a voltage-controlled PWM frequency converter comprising a rectifier () connected to an alternating-current source (U, U, U), a direct-voltage intermediate circuit and an inverter unit ()/inverter units for feeding a multi-phase alternating voltage (U, U, U) of variable frequency into a load/loads (), said rectifier bridge having controlled semiconductor switches (V&#x2013;V), especially thyristors, in one arm, preferably in the upper arm, and diodes (D&#x2013;D) in the other arm, preferably the lower arm, and said direct-voltage intermediate circuit being provided with a capacitor unit (C) of a relatively high capacitance for filtering the voltage. The filtering capacitor is charged by means of the semiconductor switches of the rectifier bridge by adjusting their firing angle according to the measured voltage of the capacitor unit, and the firing angle is adjusted by forming the sum of the measured voltage (U) of the capacitor unit and a predetermined limit voltage (U) and comparing the said sum to the measured main voltages of the supply network.

Charging of a filter capacitor in the intermediate circuit of a frequency converter

A method and system for the measurement of energy in an alternating-current motor drive containing a frequency converter or an equivalent stepless rotational speed regulator provided with semiconductor switches. In this regulator, the power taken by the motor drive from the mains is determined, and based on the power taken by the motor drive from the mains, the energy taken from the supply mains, especially the accumulated energy consumption after a given instant is determined.

Measurement of energy by means of a frequency converter

A method and a system for protecting the power semiconductor components used in the powerstages of power electronics devices, such as frequency converters, wherein calculation modeling the degree of heating of the semiconductor junction of the power components (V&#x2013;V) is used, wherein the degree of heating of the power components between the measurable outer surface or cooler and the internal semiconductor junction is determined on the basis of the dissipation power and a thermal network model of the component, wherein the temperature of the outer surface of the power component or the temperature of the cooler is measured, wherein the modeled temperature of the semiconductor junction is the sum of the measured temperature of the outer surface or cooler and the calculated degree of heating, and wherein, based on the modeled junction temperature, an alarm is issued or some other protective action is taken. In the method, the temperature of the semiconductor junction is calculated in real time, at least at time intervals equal to the shortest time constant in the thermal network model, on the basis of the heating caused by the dissipation power pulse produced during each current conduction cycle.
