A drive shaft assembly for use with downhole mud motors is capable of handling greater torque and thrust forces. The drive shaft assembly has an elongated central drive shaft, and at least one end housing optionally disposed at one or both ends of the central drive shaft. At least one end of the central drive shaft defines a rounded or partially-spherical outer end surface and a plurality of elongate protrusions or 'keys' that extend radially outward from the exterior surface of the shaft. Each end housing has a concave interior surface defining a seat for receiving a rounded end surface of the central drive shaft, as well as a plurality of circumferentially spaced axial keyways adapted to receive and engage with the keys in mating relationship. The shaft and end assemblies cooperate to facilitate omnidirectional pivotal movement and the transfer of torque forces between the shaft and each of said end housings.

A bottom hole assembly (BHA) for use in drilling a wellbore includes: a first mud motor having a stator and a rotor; a second mud motor having a stator and a rotor; a drill bit rotationally coupled to the second rotor and having a tool face and a longitudinal axis inclined relative to a longitudinal axis of the first mud motor; and a clutch. The clutch is operable to: rotationally couple the second stator to the first stator in a first mode at a first orientation of the tool face, rotationally couple the first rotor to the second stator in a second mode, change the first orientation to a second orientation by a predetermined increment, orient the tool face at the second orientation in an orienting mode, and shift among the modes in response to a change in flow rate of a fluid injected through the clutch and/or a change in weight exerted on the drill bit.

A tool module interconnect () for interconnecting to adjoining modules for insertion in a drill string features a system which permits making the electrical interconnection before assembly of the mechanical connections to interconnect the tool modules together. The interconnect comprises a hollow interconnect body () open at both ends. A wire harness () is provided in the hollow body with terminal end connectors () accessible from the respective open end of the interconnect body. The interconnect is adapted for attachment to adjoining modules, where at least one end has a rotatable threaded sleeve () for connection to a tool module by a threaded collar.
