The invention provides methods and apparatus ultimately for converting a carbonaceous material to liquid hydrocarbons suitable for use, for example, as transportation fuels. In a first step the carbonaceous material is converted to a syngas product, and in subsequent steps the syngas product is converted to the desired liquid hydrocarbons. In one embodiment, coal and methane are converted to syngas, and the syngas product is converted to hydrocarbons through a methanol intermediate. An example use for the methods and apparatus of the invention is in the preparation of aviation fuels.

This invention is directed to systems and methods for removing lipids from a fluid or from lipid-containing organisms from a fluid, such as plasma. These systems combine a fluid with at least one extraction solvent, which causes the lipids to separate from the fluid or from the lipid-containing organisms. The separated lipids are removed from the fluid. The at least one extraction solvent is removed from the fluid or at least reduced to a concentration enabling the fluid to be administered to a patient without undesirable consequences. Once the fluid has been processed, the fluid may be administered to a patient who donated the fluid or to a different patient for therapy.

This invention is directed to systems and methods for removing lipids from a fluid, such as plasma, or from lipid-containing organisms. The separated lipids are removed from the fluid. The extraction solvent is removed from the fluid or at least reduced to a level below a particular threshold enabling the fluid to be administered to a patient without the patient experiencing undesirable consequences. Once the fluid has been processed, the fluid may be administered to a patient who donated the fluid, to a different patient, or be stored.

Encapsulation of metals inside multilayered polyhedral shells of carbon (nanoencapsulates) is described. Many materials, such as metals and metal-carbides, can be encapsulated by the method of present invention, including metals such as lanthanides, transition metals, actinides and alloys. Some of these nanoencapsulate materials exhibit ferromagnetic and paramagnetic properties and have uses in the biomedical field as well as in recording media and composite materials.

A process is described for carrying out the dehydrogenation or hydrogenation, including hydrogenolysis, of a hydrocarbon in the presence of one or more soluble fullerene catalysts which have been dissolved in the hydrocarbon (when the hydrocarbon is a liquid capable of dissolving the fullerene catalyst) or dissolved in a solvent which is also a solvent for the hydrocarbon (when the hydrocarbon either is not a liquid or is not a liquid which is a solvent for the fullerene catalyst). The use of a liquid catalyst, i.e., a dissolved fullerene catalyst, inhibits coking reactions to thereby inhibit formation of coke on a solid catalyst or catalyst support by elimination of nucleation points or growth regions for such coke formation.

Hydrocarbon processing using fullerene catalysts

A process and apparatus is described for the production of purified fullerenes using a non-reactive gas to collect and transport impure fullerenes from an evaporation zone to a heated filter zone in which solid impurities may be filtered out of the mixture. If one or more condensed fullerenes are present in the gas stream entering the filter zone, such condensed fullerenes may be vaporized in the filter zone and carried to a condensation zone in which one or more vaporized fullerenes may be recovered. When more than one vaporized fullerene is present in the gas entering either the filter zone or the condensation zone, a temperature gradient may be used to permit separation and recovery of purified portions of different fullerenes.

Process and apparatus for producing and separating fullerenes

A hydrocarbon fuel is provided with one or more fullerene additives such as, for example, C60, C70, C74, C76, C78, C82, and C84 fullerenes, to serve as an identifying means for the fuel. The particular fullerene additive or additives may varying from the fullerene additive or additives in other fuels both by type as well as by amount or concentration present in the fuel. Thus, for example, if 7 different fullerenes are used in combinations of 1, 2, or 3 fullerenes, and in 5 different concentration amounts, there exists a possibility of as many as 4,935 different combinations of fuels which may all be separately identified by the presence of such combinations of fullerenes therein.
