The present invention is directed to the provision of an FSC type color display device wherein the frame frequency is set within a range of 20 Hz to 59 Hz, and a portable electronic appliance incorporating such a display device. The color display device according to the present invention includes a plurality of light sources, which emit respectively different colors, and a light source controller for sequentially and selectively emitting of predetermined light source within the plurality of light sources, and repeating the sequential and selective emitting with a predetermined cycle, wherein a frequency of the predetermined cycle is set so that, when the color display device is held stationary, the colors emitted from the plurality of light sources are not visible as separate colors, but when the color display device is in motion, the colors emitted from the plurality of light sources are visible as separate colors.

The present invention suppresses the generation of a leak current that accompanies the polarity inversion of the voltage waveform of the opposing electrode. The display device that performs display by sequentially scanning a plurality of scan signal lines in a single cycle period comprises: a plurality of data signal lines that intersect the scan signal lines; a pixel electrode that is connected to the data signal lines; and an opposing electrode that is disposed opposite the pixel electrode and for which the polarity of an application voltage is inverted in each of the cycle periods. The cycle period includes a scan period in which one full scan of the scan signal lines is performed and a non-scan period in which the scan signal lines are not scanned. In the non-scan period, the absolute value across the gate and drain is held at or above a predetermined value and the decrease in a voltage difference between a pixel potential and a gate OFF potential caused by the polarity inversion of the application voltage to the opposing electrode is reduced. In a non-scan period, the polarity of the voltage applied to the opposing electrode is fixed at either polarity irrespective of the polarity inversion of the voltage of the opposing electrode in each cycle period.

Display device

The object of the invention is to provide an FSC display apparatus that can easily achieve color balance. The display apparatus () according to the present invention, which includes a light source () for emitting a plurality of colored lights in sequence and in a repetitive manner and a display section () for controlling transmission or reflection of the lights emitted from the light source, produces a color display by dividing each field into a plurality of subfields and by causing a designated one of the plurality of colored lights to be emitted at least during a part of a period within the plurality of subfields thereby displaying on the display section an image corresponding to the designated colored light, wherein each of the subfields includes at least a data writing period for writing display data to the display section and a light-emission period for emitting the designated colored light, and the end timing of the light-emission period can be set in a variable manner.

Ferroelectric liquid crystal apparatus and method for driving the same
