Compounds of the Formula (I) wherein x is an integer from 1-4; p is an integer from 1-3; q is an integer from 0-3; Ar is phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl or phenanthryl each of which optionally is substituted by one or more Cl, CN, OR, C-Calkenyl or C-Calkyl which optionally is substituted by one or more OR, COOR or halogen; Rif x is 1, is OR, O&#x2014;X, NRR, C-Calkyl optionally substituted by one or more COOR, or is C-Calkyl interrupted by one ore more O, or is C-Calkenyl or phenyl-C-Calkyl; Rif x is 2, is for example C-Calkylene; Rif x is 3, is for example a tri-valent radical; Rif x is 4, is for example a tetravalent radical; Rand Rare hydrogen or C-Calkyl, or Rand Rtogether are O, C-Calkylene or CH&#x2550;CH; Ris C-Calkyl; R, R, R, R, Rand Rare for example hydrogen or C-Calkyl; and X is a x-valent cationic counter ion; are in particular suitable as photoinitiators for the curing with UV-A light (320-450 nm). 

Alpha-hydroxyketones

The invention relates to novel photoinitiators of formula (I) wherein each of the substituents is given the definition as set forth in the Specification and the claims. The photoinitiators can be used to prepare multifunctional photoinitiators. 

Functionalized photoinitiators

The invention relates to novel photoinitiators of formula (I) wherein A is &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH, CH(CH)&#x2014; or &#x2014;C(CH), and R is methyl or trimethylsilyl, and R may in addition be hydrogen when A is simultaneously the group &#x2014;C(CH). The invention relates also to compositions comprising (A) at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound, (B) a photoinitiator of formula (I), (C) optionally further binders or additives, (D) optionally further photoinitiators or co-initiators. Compositions comprising (A) an ethylenically unsaturated compound that contains at least one aminoacrylate, (B) a photoinitiator of formula (II) or (III), (C) optionally further binders or additives, (D) optionally further photoinitiators or co-initiators.

Trifunctional photoinitiators

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a crystalline isomeric mixture of compounds of formulae (I) and (II) which process comprises the following steps: a) the slow addition of aluminium chloride, in portions, to a solution comprising 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindan and isobutyric acid halide in a suitable solvent at a reaction temperature of from &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. to 20&#xb0; C., an isomeric mixture consisting of compounds of formulae (Ia) and (IIa) being obtained; b) enol chlorination of compounds (Ia) and (IIa), an isomeric mixture consisting of compounds of formulae (Ib) and (IIb) being obtained; c) hydrolysis of the chlorinated isomeric mixture from step b). The invention relates also to the preparation of the individual compounds (I) and (II).
