The present invention is concerned with a novel azo compound represented by formula (1), (2) or (3), a water-soluble dye comprising this azo compound, and a polarizing film containing this azo compound. The obtained polarizing film has high hydrothermoresistance and a high polarization degree and is excellent in optical characteristics: ##STR1## wherein each of the groups is defined.

Azo compound and polarizing film

The present invention relates to a color filter having polarizability, which comprises a dye having a spectral transmissibility, a dichroic dye having a polarizability, corresponding to the former dye and a base resin. The filter can be produced by coating and fixing the former dye on a monochromatic polarizing film produced by using the dichroic dye; mixing the former dye, the dichroic dye and the base resin, melting and extruding the mixture to produce a film and monoaxially stretching the film; dyeing a transparent film with the former dye and the dichroic dye and then monoaxially stretching the dyed film; or dyeing a transparent monoaxially stretched film with the former dye and the dichroic dye.

Novel quinophthalone compounds, which are represented by the following formula (1): ##STR1## R.sub.1 -R.sub.5 each independently represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, linear or branched alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, halogenated alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxy, nitro, amino, alkylamino, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, alkylaminocarbonyl, alkylcarbonylamino, alkylcarbonyloxy or cyano group; R.sub.6 -R.sub.17 each independently represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxyl, alkyl, halogenated alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, amino, alkylamino, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, alkylaminocarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy or cyano group; m and n each stands for 0 or 1; and A represents a substituent, are yellow orange dyestuffs suitable for polarizing films. Polarizing films containing at least one of the compounds in a hydrophobic resin are excellent in polarizing performance, heat-resistant dimensional stability, moist heat resistance and the like and are extremely useful for liquid crystal display devices.

Novel azo compounds having the specific structural formula (1) or (3) set out below, water-soluble dyes containing the compounds, and polarizing films containing the water-soluble dyes: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxyl, C.sub.1-2 alkyl, C.sub.1-2 alkoxyl, C.sub.1-2 acylamino, cyano, carboxyl or sulfonic acid group; R.sub.3 and R.sub.8 individually represent a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl, C.sub.1-2 alkyl or C.sub.1-2 alkoxyl group; R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 individually represent a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl, C.sub.1-2 alkyl, C.sub.1-2 alkoxyl or C.sub.1-2 acylamino group; R.sub.5 represents a hydrogen atom or a carboxyl or C.sub.1-2 alkoxyl group; R.sub.6 represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl, amino, methylamino, .beta.-hydroxyethylamino or C.sub.1-2 acylamino group, or a phenylamino or benzoylamino group which the phenyl nucleus may be substituted by one or more nitro, amino, hydroxyl, C.sub.1-2 alkyl, carboxyl and/or sulfonic acid groups and/or chlorine atoms; R.sub.7 represents a hydroxyl or amino group and substitutes at o- or p-position relative to the azo group; m stands for 0 or 1; p stands for 0 or 1; q stands for 0, 1 or 2; and M represents a copper, nickel, zinc and iron atom.

The present invention is concerned with a novel azo compound represented by formula (1), (2) or (3), a water-soluble dye comprising this azo compound, and a polarizing film containing this azo compound. The obtained polarizing film has high hydrothermoresistance and a high polarization degree and is excellent in optical characteristics: ##STR1## wherein each of R.sub.1, R.sub.3 and R.sub.12 is independently a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, hydroxyl group, alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, or alkoxy group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; each of R.sub.2, R.sub.4, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 is independently a hydrogen atom, hydroxyl group, alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, alkoxy group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, or acetylamino group; R.sub.5 is a hydroxyl group or amino group at the o-position or p-position to the azo group; each of R.sub.6 and R.sub.10 is a hydrogen atom, carboxyl group, or alkoxy group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; each of R.sub.7 and R.sub.11 is a hydrogen atom, hydroxyl group, amino group, methylamino group, .beta.-hydroxyethylamino group, acetylamino group, or phenylamino or benzoylamino group in which the phenyl nucleus may be substituted by a nitro group, amino group, hydroxyl group, alkyl group having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, carboxyl group, sulfonic group or chlorine atom; p is 0 or 1; and q is 0, 1 or 2.

Polarizing film of a hydrophilic polymer film containing a novel azo

A 2H-1-benzopyran-2-on compound represented by the formula (1): ##STR1## and a colorless ultraviolet absorber consisting of the compound, and a thermoplastic resin composition and formed article comprising said ultraviolet absorber. The compound can provide a thermoplastic resin composition and a formed article of the composition having excellent heat stability and sublimation resistance, comprise a non-coloring ultraviolet absorber, and are excellent in ultraviolet barrier property.
