The invention relates to a detergent composition comprising an internal olefin sulfonate salt having from 8 to 26 carbon atoms, wherein at least 25% by weight of the internal olfein sulfonate salt is in the beta-hydroxy alkane sulfonate form. It has been found that internal olefin sulfonate salts having enhanced beta-hydroxy alkane sulfonate content provide excellent detergency.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a 1,2-dioxime of the general formula A--C(.dbd.NOH)--C(.dbd.NOH)--R, wherein A represents an aromatic group and R a hydrocarbyl group or a hydrogen atom, which process comprises the reaction of hydroxylamine with one or more hydroxyiminoketones of formula A--C(.dbd.O)--C(.dbd.NOH)--R or of formula A--C(.dbd.NOH)--C(.dbd.NOH)--R in the presence of a nickel compound forming a complex with the 1,2-dioxime.

Process for the preparation of 1,2-dioximes

A process is described for the selective recovery of nickel values from an aqueous solution containing nickel values by means of liquid/liquid extraction, wherein the aqueous solution is contacted with an organic extractant comprising a substantially water-immisicible organic solvent and one or more of certain alpha,beta-dioxime compounds. Novel alpha, beta-dioxime compounds for use in the extraction process are also described.

Liquid/liquid extraction of nickel values

A process is described for the recovery of copper values from an acidic aqueous solution containing copper values by means of liquid-liquid extraction, wherein the extractant is a mixture comprising a substantially water-immiscible organic solvent, one or more hydroxyoximes capable of extracting copper values, and one or more alpha, betadioximes of the anti-configuration. Novel alpha, beta-dioxime compounds are also disclosed.

Extraction of copper values from aqueous solution

Novel 2-hydroxyiminoacetic acids of the formula ##STR1## where R is an aromatic hydrocarbyl group substituted with one or more aliphatic chains of at least four carbon atoms are excellent for the extraction of metal values from acidic metal - containing aqueous solutions, particularly for the separation of Cu from Fe, Ni from Co and Ca from Mg.
