Liner plates of mild steel layered over with chromium carbide are provided with a bi-planar spacer clip also acting as a lifting eye on the top surfaces thereof and fasteners such as bolts or studs extending from the exposed planar surface of the mild steel layer. A chain and hook arrangement is used to deliver and locate each liner plate adjacent a wall upon which the liner plates are to be mounted in vertically stacked relationship. The clips serve as spacers between vertically stacked liner plates and the fasteners extend through pre-formed holes in the wall of the delivery structure. The clips have a notched base portion which receives a weld bead running along the top exposed edge of only the mild steel layer. The clips are left in place after installation and are gradually worn away by ore traveling through the delivery structure.

Method and apparatus for installing wear-resistant liner plates

An improved end housing for nozzle assemblies used to project a stream of particulate coal into a burner housing. The improvement includes the addition of vertically-oriented, spaced parallel aiming plates. A four nozzle burner assembly has two sets of diagonally opposite nozzles in which all nozzles are aimed directly at the fireball center.

Tilt nozzle for coal-fired burner

A lump coal size sorting grate comprising parallel bars is provided with three spaced apart, parallel cleaning combs which can be individually activated to clean the sizing grid of lodged coal lumps in a predetermined sequence so that the entire sizing grid is never closed during a coal sorting operation. The cleaning combs are made of spaced, parallel bars which can be pivoted upwardly, between and through the bars of the sizing grate. An adaptive system which senses and responds to a clogged condition in the grate can be provided by sensing crusher motor current or, in the alternative, sensing grate bar deflection using strain gage transducers.

Multiple embodiments of a variable flow classifier for vertical air-swept coal pulverizers are disclosed. In all embodiments, a classifier structure includes a cone with means for providing a pattern of inlet ports for introducing airborne coal to the cone wherein said means allows for selective variation in the size of the ports.

Classifier with variable entry ports

An improved deflector structure for an updraft classifier mill for coal and ore is described. The improved deflector structure has an impingement surface which is characterized by a pattern of surface irregularities, either raised geometric figures or recesses of varying sizes and shapes to create turbulence in the air emerging from a rotating vane structure and impinging the deflector as it travels upwardly through the mill housing.

Coal pulverizer/classifier deflector

Load cells are placed in the pre-compression systems of spring suspended rollers in coal/ore crusher/classifiers to produce electrical signals representing actual forces generated in the suspension system during crusher operation. This permits forces to be closely monitored during operation and/or automatically adjusted. Alternatively or in addition, alarm signals can be generated when pressures go out of tolerance.

Pressure monitor for pulverizer

An annular impactor structure for use in crusher/classifiers of the updraft type. An annular structure comprising a plurality of radially inwardly projecting, essentially vertical impactor plates of high-hardness material is located immediately above a vane structure such that entrained particulate matter from a milling bowl impacts one or both of the impactor plate surfaces. The impactor plates as well as the backer structures between the impactor plates are covered with coin-shaped protrusions. The impactor plate structure can be used in combination with a single or double course vane structure.

Impactor ring for updraft classifiers

A double course vane assembly for use in connection with the milling bowl of a pulverizer/classifier. The two courses are either attached to the outer peripheral edge of the milling bowl so as to rotate with the bowl or are attached to the pulverizer/classifier wall so as to remain stationary. In both embodiments, the vane courses are concentric with one another. The vanes in the first course are angled in one sense and the vanes of the second course are angled in the opposite sense.

Double course vane wheel

A simplified variable orifice for a conduit furnishing a stream of particulate coal to a burner for a turbine in an electrical utility plant. Two plates are installed across the conduit, one of them being fixed and the other being variable in angular position relative to the first. A lockable mechanism is provided externally of the conduit to manually adjust the degree of blocking and to indicate the position of the movable plate.

Variable orifice for particulate coal conduit

A static classifier cage is formed in upper and lower tiers of circumferentially spaced bar-shaped vanes of wear-resistant material. The lower tier is formed by and between a bottom ring and an intermediate ring. The top tier is formed by and between the intermediate ring and a topmost ring. In each tier, the lowermost ring is provided with slots to receive and act as a seat for the vertically oriented vanes while the upper ring in the tier is provided with radially outwardly opening notches into which the vanes are moved in a radial fashion. After the vanes are installed, a retainer is fastened into position to prevent the vanes from backing out of the notches.

Static classifier cage

The OEM Venturi and outlet structures of a conventional coal classifier are removed and replaced with a simple turret having four outlet openings which are connected to the combustion chamber feed conduits. The Venturi and kidney-shaped transition tubes of the OEM structure are scrapped.

Method and apparatus for converting coal classifier outlet to turret adapted for diffusion technology

A variable orifice for use in connection with a conduit designed to convey particulate material comprising a set of semi-circular plates mounted on respective concentric shafts so that they may be rotated in opposite directions between a first position in which they extend across the interior of the conduit for maximum flow resistance to a second folded condition where they are adjacent and parallel to one another to present minimum flow resistance. An actuator is connected through the concentric shafts to the plates and mounts on the outside of the conduit surface. The unit is operated by hand crank and has a position indicator. The size of the valve plates is such that, even when fully extended relative to one another and lying across the cross-section of the conduit, only about a 30% restriction is produced.
