A luminaire comprising a light source comprising a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a combination heat spreader and heat sink disposed in thermal communication with the light source such that the combination heat spreader and heat sink facilitates transfer of heat away from the LEDs. The combination heat spreader and heat sink have an outer dimension that is larger than an opening defined by a nominally sized can light fixture and an opening defined by a nominally sized electrical junction box. A back surface of the combination heat spreader and heat sink is configured to permit the luminaire to be flush mounted on the mounting surface.

Low profile light and accessory kit for the same

A luminaire includes a light source having a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs), a heat spreader, and a substantially ring-shaped trim plate. The heat spreader is disposed between and in thermal communication with the light source and the trim plate such that the heat spreader facilitates transfer of heat from the LEDs to the trim plate. The trim plate is structurally configured and disposed for dissipating heat generated by the light source. The trim plate has an outer dimension that is larger than: an opening defined by a nominally sized can light fixture; and, an opening defined by a nominally sized electrical junction box.

A luminaire with a prismatic optic permits the nearly uniform distribution of light about the luminaire. The prismatic optic permits the use of directional light sources, such as light emitting diodes, while maintaining the uniform light distribution. When light emitting diodes are used, the luminaire further includes a heat sink to maintain a desirable operational temperature without negatively affecting the light distribution properties of the luminaire.

A flushmount luminaire is configured to be flush mounted on a mounting surface. The flushmount luminaire includes a light source having a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs); a combination heat spreader and heat sink disposed in thermal communication with the light source such that the combination heat spreader and heat sink facilitates transfer of heat away from the LEDs; and, a power conditioner structurally configured and disposed to receive AC voltage from an electrical supply and to provide DC voltage to the plurality of LEDs. The combination heat spreader and heat sink has an outer dimension that is larger than: an opening defined by a nominally sized can light fixture; and, an opening defined by a nominally sized electrical junction box. A back surface of the combination heat spreader and heat sink is configured to permit the flushmount luminaire to be flush mounted on the mounting surface.

A luminaire comprising a base, an optic attached to the base, a heat sink integrally molded within the base, and a heat-generating element comprising an LED-based light source in thermal communication with the heat sink. The light source may be positioned such that light emitted by the LED is emitted into an optical chamber defined by the first housing. A second housing may comprise channels formed by opposing pairs of fin guards. The heat sink may comprise a plurality of fin assemblies connected along a perimeter of a heat-generating element contacting portion of the heat sink. A proximal edge of each fin assembly may be positioned adjacent to an outer surface of the first housing. A distal edge of each fin assembly may be positioned so as to be coextensive with a respective channel and substantially exposed to the environment external to the luminaire.

Luminaire with integrally molded cooling system and method for manufacturing

A lighting device may include an electrical base, a stabilizer adapted to be matingly connected to the electrical base, a body member, and an optic connected to the body member and defining an optical chamber. A light source may be positioned within the optical chamber and in electrical communication with the electrical base. The stabilizer may be transitionable from an engaged position with the electrical base and a disengaged position with the electrical base. The disengaged position allows for the stabilizer to be translated longitudinally with respect to the base member. The engaged position slidably fixes the stabilizer with respect to the heat sink by reducing space between the electrical base, the enclosure and the heat sink.

Lighting device having a movable housing

A luminaire may include an electrical base, an optic defining an optical chamber, an intermediate member that may be positioned between the electrical base and the optic, and a light source. The intermediate member may include a main body and a plurality of structural supports that may be connected to the main body which may be configured to carry an upper member. A plurality of voids may be positioned between the respective plurality of structural supports to position the optical chamber in optical communication with the environment surrounding the luminaire therethrough. The upper member may be configured to carry the optic and the light source may be electrically coupled to the electrical base and may be positioned within the optical chamber. The optic may be configured to redirect at least a portion of light incident thereupon in the direction of the plurality of voids.

Luminaire having vented optical chamber and associated methods

A luminaire with a prismatic optic permits the nearly uniform distribution of light about the luminaire. The prismatic optic permits the use of directional light sources, such as light emitting diodes, while maintaining the uniform light distribution. Furthermore, a concave shape of the optic further enables uniform light distribution. When light emitting diodes are used, the luminaire further includes a heat sink to maintain a desirable operational temperature without negatively affecting the light distribution properties of the luminaire.

A luminaire comprising a base, a heat sink modularly connected to the base, and a heat-generating element in thermal communication with the modular heat sink. The heat sink may include a heat-generating element contacting portion, and a plurality of heat sink segments connected to and extending outwardly therefrom. Each of the heat sink assemblies segments may comprise at least one fin assembly. Each heat sink segment may pass through a respective plurality of passageways in the top portion of the base so that the heat sink segments may matingly engage the medial portion of the base. A method for forming a heat sink comprises fabricating a heat-generating element contacting portion, constructing a plurality of heat sink segments, and assembling the plurality of heat sink segments to connect to and extend outwardly from the bottom surface of the heat-generating element contacting portion.

Luminaire with modular cooling system and associated methods

A luminaire includes a heat spreader, a heat sink, a light source and an outer optic. The heat sink is substantially ring-shaped and is disposed around and in thermal communication with an outer periphery of the heat spreader. The light source is disposed in thermal communication with the heat spreader, the light source having a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) that are disposed in thermal communication with the heat spreader. The outer optic is disposed in optical communication with the plurality of LEDs. The heat spreader, the heat sink and the outer optic, in combination, have an overall height H and an overall outside dimension D such that the ratio of H/D is so dimensioned as to: cover an opening defined by a nominally sized four-inch can light fixture; and, cover an opening defined by a nominally sized four-inch electrical junction box.

A luminaire to be carried by a lighting fixture. The luminaire may include a housing, a primary optic disposed within the housing having a reflective inner surface defining an optical chamber, a light source, and a heat sink defining an aperture through which light may propagate. The light source may include a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The luminaire may further include a secondary optic positioned adjacent to the light source that may collimate and/or refract light emitted by the light source, and may form a seal between the light source and the optical chamber. The luminaire may further include a color conversion layer configured to change the color of light emitted by the light source.
