A liquid filter apparatus and system is provided. The liquid filter apparatus and system is especially suitable for purifying water. The apparatus and system may have a solid portion and/or a porous filter portion called a monolithic unit. The present apparatus and system is suitable for providing clean water for drinking, cooking, washing and other household, public, medical, agricultural and industrial uses. The present apparatus and system utilizes anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-mold and/or other cleansing elements to purify the liquid. The liquid passing through the system must pass through the monolithic unit which is solid and porous therein contacting the antimicrobial material and/or antimicrobial components located within the monolithic unit. The apparatus and system provide a high hydraulic conductivity as a result of the solid and porous nature of the monolithic unit.

A liquid purification system is provided. Although not limited to water, the purification system is especially suitable for water. The purification system utilizes a vessel having antimicrobial inner wall load bearing surfaces and/or antimicrobial (antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-mold, etc.) interior non-load bearing surfaces. When the liquid moves within the vessel and contacts the antimicrobial surfaces, the liquid becomes purified or sanitized. The inner wall load bearing surfaces and non-load bearing interior surfaces of the vessel may be manufactured from a host polymer that has antimicrobial organo-metallic additives which form a solid-solution with the host polymer and are distributed homogeneously throughout the host polymer. The host polymer matrix may be an organic material, an inorganic material or an organic-inorganic material blend. The antimicrobial agent polymer matrix may be located in localized zones within the vessel.

Antimicrobial polymer systems using multifunctional organometallic additives for wax hosts

An electronic device includes a housing, an electronic display viewable from a front side of the electronic device, an optical shuttering layer substantially parallel to the front side, and a color changing layer positioned over at least a portion of the shuttering layer. A driver controls transitions of the shuttering layer between a transparent clear state and an opaque state and also transitions of the color changing layer between a transparent clear state and a colored state. Depending on driver control, the appearance of the electronic device can change from an opaque color (solid color or with graphic design elements), to a translucent color (solid color or with graphic design elements) possibly with an underlying electronic display somewhat visible, to a transparent color with an underlying electronic display clearly visible.

Radiation () is selectively applied to the photoreactive material () to irreversibly change the color of the photoreactive material () and therefore the housing (). An optional patterned layer () may be disposed between the photoreactive material () and the selective application of radiation (), and a background color () may be included, to affect the visual presentation of the housing ().

Method and apparatus for altering device appearance

A backlighting device () emitting light having a first wavelength includes a first radiation emission device (), e.g., an electroluminescent lamp, for emitting radiation having a second wavelength. A layer () of a plurality of photon emitting particles (), e.g., free standing quantum dots or phosphorus particles, emits light having the first wavelength in response to the first radiation emission device (), the first wavelength being larger than the second wavelength. A transparent material () overlies the layer of a plurality of photon emitting particles (), wherein the light having a first wavelength passes through the transparent material (). Optionally, a filter () may be placed over the layer () to block the radiation having a second wavelength, and a scattering layer () may be placed over the layer () to scatter wavelength other than the first wavelength.

Apparatus for selectively backlighting a material

Disclosed is a display of a particular size that may be perceived as larger than the particular size as a result of light emitted by one or more light guides adjacent the perimeter of the display. The display may also be perceived as brighter. In particular, the display is configured to output a changing image. A light guide is disposed adjacent at least a portion of the perimeter of the display and coupled to a multicolor LED. A controller of the electronic device is configured to analyze the changing image to determine the color content. The multicolor LED is driven to emit light according to the color content of the changing image. The light guide is configured to couple light from the LED in a direction parallel to the display viewing surface, and to couple light out of the light guide in a direction away from the display viewing surface.

A device () with modal lighting includes a translucent layer (); a first light source () operative to project light () through the translucent layer (); and a second light source () operative to project light () through the translucent layer (). The first light source () prevents light () projected from the second light source () from entering a portion () of the translucent layer.
