A method, a device, and a non-transitory storage medium provide a network evaluation service. The service collects live network traffic data for a client device in a network; stores a benchmark pattern model; determines a category of the live network traffic data based on a segment size; detects a first traffic pattern of the live network traffic data based on measured segment parameters for the category; matches the first traffic pattern to a second traffic pattern in the benchmark pattern model to identify a result; compares the live network traffic data with a benchmark application pattern from the benchmark pattern model; and identifies, based on the comparing, a level of degraded performance in the network.

Systems for testing set-top boxes and content distribution networks are provided. In general, systems and methods are described for simulating a set-top box subscriber base, remotely controlling the operations of the set-top boxes of the simulated subscriber base, and analyzing the quality of transmissions received by the set-top boxes. Houses, streets, and towns are simulated using multiple set-top boxes connected to a network. A controller is configured to remotely instruct the set-top boxes to access content from the network and to monitor the operations of the set-top boxes, and an analyzer is configured to monitor the quality of the transmissions received. Methods are also provided for testing set-top boxes and content distribution networks and for testing the quality of transmissions from one source as compared to another source.

A method and system of an embodiment may provide a user interface enabling automated testing of a network device. The automated testing may include specifying a network device to be tested, specifying a network technology for testing the network device, specifying a client of the network device, configuring network connectivity for the network device, and enabling execution by the client of a network device of a test action. Configuring network connectivity may include dynamically configuring a network to include the specified network technology and the specified network device.
