A process for making a colored article of manufacture is disclosed. Accordingly an article of manufacture is first prepared of a material selected from the group consisting of metal, wood, glass, ceramic, masonry and polymeric materials. A polymeric coating (superstrate) is then applied to at least a portion of the surface of the article. At least a portion of the superstrate is brought into contact with a material system that contains (i) water, (ii) a carrier, (iii) a dye and (iv) a diol, under conditions calculated to bring about diffusion of said dye into said superstrate.

Colored article of manufacture and a process for its preparation

A process and an apparatus for treating large articles to impart color or performance enhancing additives to the article in which a treatment system which includes: (i) a coloring solution and/or a solution containing at least one performance enhancing additive, (ii) water, and (iii) a solvent such as ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and diethylene glycol is applied to the article. The apparatus is made up of (a) a spray enclosure sized to contain the article(s) to be treated; (b) dispensing means, such as nozzles, which are configured to dispense sequentially, hot solution (i), hot solution (ii) and hot water (iii) directly onto the article surface(s); (c) means for securing and transporting the article to be treated into and out of the spray enclosure (such as a trolley system); and at least three closed vessels capable of delivering enough hot saturated coloring and/or performance enhancing solution, hot dye-free rinse solution and deionized water, respectively, with sufficient pressure to form small droplets from the spray nozzles, to thoroughly cover and rinse articles contained in the enclosure.

Apparatus and process for treating an article to impart color and/or enhance the properties of that article

In the method of the present invention at least a portion of the surface of a plastic article (e.g., a molded article of thermoplastic polycarbonate) is contacted with (e.g., immersed in) a treatment composition which includes one or more performance additives. The treatment composition contains: (i) at least one performance additive (e.g., an ultraviolet light absorber); (ii) water; (iii) at least one carrier represented by the following general formula I, wherein Ris a radical selected from the group consisting of linear or branched C-Calkyl, benzyl, benzoyl and phenyl, Ris a radical selected from the group consisting of linear or branched C-Calkyl, benzyl, benzoyl, phenyl and H, n is 2, 3 or 4, and m is 1 to 35; and (iv) a diol selected from at least one of linear or branched C-Caliphatic diols, poly(C-Calkylene glycol), cycloaliphatic diols having from 5 to 8 carbon atoms in the cyclic ring, monocyclic aromatic diols, bisphenols and hydrogenated bisphenols. In an embodiment of the present invention, the carrier is ethyleneglycol monobutyl ether, and the diol is diethylene glycol.

Method of treating a plastic article

In the method of the present invention a plastic article (e.g., a molded article of thermoplastic polycarbonate) is immersed at least partially in a dye bath which includes one or more dyes, water, at least one carrier, and at least one diol. The dye bath contains: (i) at least one dye (e.g., a static and/or photochromic dye); (ii) water; (iii) at least one carrier represented by the following general formula I,R&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;OHIwherein R is a radical selected from linear or branched C&#x2013;Calkyl, benzyl, benzoyl and phenyl, and n is 2 or 3; and (iv) a diol selected from at least one of linear or branched C&#x2013;Caliphatic diols, poly(C&#x2013;Calkylene glycol), cycloaliphatic diols having from 5 to 8 carbon atoms in the cyclic ring, monocyclic aromatic diols, bisphenols and hydrogenated bisphenols. In an embodiment of the present invention, the carrier is ethyleneglycol butyl ether, and the diol is diethylene glycol. The present invention also relates to a method of separating the dye from the water, carrier and diol components of the dye bath, by contacting the dye bath with particulate activated carbon.

Method of dyeing a plastic article

A composition of matter (e.g., a molded article) is described. More particularly, the composition of matter includes: (a) a resinous component selected from at least one member of the group consisting of (co)polyester, (co)polycarbonates, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, polyamide, polyurethane, polyalkyl(meth)acrylate and styrene copolymers; (b) at least one water-insoluble dye; (c) a carrier represented by the following formula,R[&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CH)]ORwherein Ris butyl, Ris H, n is 2 or 3, and m is 2&#x2013;35; (d) an emulsifier that is poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), alpha-phenyl-omega-hydroxy, styrenated; and (e) a particulate or plate-like material, such as metal flakes.

Composition of matter comprising a dye

A process for tinting a molded article is disclosed. The process entails applying by spraying or by flow coating a hot, dye-solution onto at least a portion of the surface of a molded article to obtain a tinted article and washing the tinted article. In addition to the dissolved dye, the dye solution that is substantially free of particulate matter contains an aqueous solution of a carrier and an optional emulsifier. The article is one molded of a thermoplastic molding composition. In an embodiment of the invention, the dye solution is prepared by filtering a hot aqueous solution through a bag filter that contains a dye to obtain a hot, dye-solution. In a further embodiment, activated carbon is used to purify the dye solution to obtain a dye-free aqueous solution.

Process for tinting plastic articles

A process of dyeing a molded article is disclosed. The process entails immersing at least a portion of the article in a dyeing bath, retaining the portion in the bath for a period of time sufficient to allow an amount of dye to diffuse into the article, and removing said article from the bath. The molded article comprises a polymeric resin such as (co)polyester, (co)polycarbonates, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, polyamide, polyurethane, polyalkyl(meth)-acrylate, allyldiglycol carbonate and styrene copolymers. The dyeing bath contains in addition to dye, water, a plasticizing agent and a leveling agent.

Process for making dyed articles

A composition of matter (e.g., a molded article) is described. More particularly, the composition of matter includes: (a) a resinous component selected from at least one member of the group consisting of (co)polyester, (co)polycarbonates, acrylontrile-butadiene-styrene, polyamide, polyurethane, polyalkyl(meth)acrylate and styrene copolymers; (b) at least one dye; (c) a carrier represented by the following formula,R[&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CH)]ORwherein Ris butyl, Ris H, n is 2 or 3, and m is 2-35; and (d) optionally emulsifier. Also described is a dye bath that includes: (a) water; (b) at least one dye; (c) a carrier represented by the above formula; and (d) optionally an emulsifier.

Dip-dyeable polycarbonate process

A process of dyeing a molded article is disclosed. The process entails immersing at least a portion of the article in a dyeing bath, retaining the portion in the bath for a period of time sufficient to allow an amount of dye to diffuse into the article, and removing said article from the bath. The molded article comprises a polymeric resin such as (co)polyester, (co)polycarbonates, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, polyamide, polyurethane, polyalkyl(meth)acrylate, allyldiglycol carbonate and styrene copolymers. The dyeing bath contains in addition to dye, water, a plasticizing agent and a leveling agent.

A thermoplastic molding composition comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane and an olefinic copolymer is disclosed. The polyurethane component contains ether structural units and units derived from an aliphatic isocyanate. The molecular structure of the copolymer contains units derived from monomers containing olefinic unsaturation. The composition is characterized in the compatibility of its resinous components and in the improved mechanical properties.

Compatible blends of thermoplastic polyurethane with certain polyolefins

The present invention relates to a process for producing a dispersion of polymeric microspheres in a polyol comprising expanding 1 to 70% by weight of polymeric beads in a polyol with a twin screw extruder to simultaneously mix and expand the beads to create a uniform dispersion of the microspheres in the polyol such that the wetting of the microspheres by the polyol is maximized.

Expansion of polymeric microspheres insitu in a rigid PUR/PIR foam

A process for making a copolymeric resin is disclosed. Accordingly, component (a) and component (b) are introduced into an extruder under conditions designed to promote reactive blending therebetween in the presence of a transesterification catalyst. Component (a) is a wet aromatic polycarbonate resin containing moisture in an amount greater than 0.02 weight percent and having units conforming to ##STR1## wherein D is a divalent residue of a dihydroxy compound. Component (b) is a lactone-siloxane block copolymer having structural units conforming to ##STR2## wherein m is 1-90, n is 60-150, R is an alkyl or a phenyl radical, p is 2-12 and q is 2-20. Surprisingly, use of moisture-containing polycarbonate in the process yields a copolymer having good properties, although a corresponding process where the lactone-siloxane block copolymer reactant has a smaller number of repeating units yields inferior product.

Process for preparing a copolycarbonate

A thermoplastic molding composition having improved impact strength and a process for its preparation are disclosed. The structure of the resinous component of the composition contains carbonate structural units, polyester structural units and lactone-siloxane structural units conforming to ##STR1## wherein m is 1 to 90, n is 5 to 300, R is an alkyl or a phenyl radical, p is 2 to 12 and q is 2 to 20. The preparation of the resinous component entails reactive blending in the presence of a transesterification catalyst of polycarbonate, (co)polyester and a lactone siloxane copolymer.

Molding composition having improved impact strength

A thermoplastic molding composition stabilized against .gamma.-rays and its application for manufacture of medical equipment is disclosed. The composition contains an aromatic polycarbonate and (i) dialkyl and/or dicycloalkyl monosulfides or polysulfides in an amount of 0.001 to 5 weight %, and optionally (ii) aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoalcohols or polyalcohols or their derivatives in an amount of 0.001 to 2 weight % said percent being relative to 100 weight % of aromatic polycarbonate.
