A non-linear optical material comprising a plurality of non-centrosymmetric nanoparticles juxtaposed to non-linear optical (NLO) film at a localized surface Plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the nanoparticles. The LSPR is resonant at a wavelength of an incident light source, wherein a second-order non-linear susceptibility (&#x3c7;(2)) of the NLO film with respect to the incident light is enhanced by the juxtaposition to the LSPR of the nanoparticles. The non-linear optical material lacks global inversion symmetry.

Enhancement of second-order non-linear optical susceptibilities in organic film materials using non-centrosymmetric nanoparticles

Thin films exhibiting second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, as well as materials and methods for producing such films, are provided. The films are formed by depositing, on a substrate, alternate layers of a polyelectrolyte and a low molecular weight chromophore. The chromophore contains an electrophilic group that reacts with a previously deposited polyelectrolyte, and ionizable groups which present absorption sites for the next polyelectrolyte layer. The films find application in, for example, electro-optic modulators and frequency doubling devices.

Polar ordering of reactive chromophores in layer-by-layer nonlinear optical materials

An extrinsic optical waveguide sensor for making refractive index measurements of an in situ sample is provided. The sensor comprises a holder having at least one sample input region and at least one interferometric region. At least one optical fiber is positioned in the holder, each optical fiber having an endface serving as an input and an output. At least one reflector, each reflector is positioned in the holder in an operable relationship to each optical fiber endface, thus defining each interferometric region.

Extrinisic optical waveguide sensors

UV absorbing glass is prepared by mixing ultrafine colloidal cerium oxide with glass-forming substances during the fabrication of the glass. An aqueous colloidal dispersion containing 1-20 weight percent 10-20 nm cerium oxide particles, optionally including a binder, is admixed with silica sand, and the sand is dried, melted and cooled to give a relatively clear UV absorbing glass containing 0.3-2 weight percent cerium oxide.

Fine particles of semi-crystalline ketone-containing aromatic polymers (PEEK, PEKK, etc.) are produced by controlling the rate and conditions of hydrolysis of an amorphous polyarylketimine intermediate. The choice of acid and its concentrations affects the rate of ketimine hydrolysis and subsequent particle formation. In addition, zero or reduced amounts of agitation during hydrolysis has been found to promote the formation of smaller (submicron) sized particles which are spherical in shape, while greater amounts of agitation or shear stress applied during hydrolysis results in nonspherical, larger particles. Carbon fiber reinforced composites were made from aqueous suspensions of these particles that were dispersed or stabilized by a water soluble polymer.
