A cathode-ray tube having a luminescent screen on a faceplate panel and a tension mask assembly, wherein the assembly comprises a pair of support blades for supporting a tension mask. The tension mask has a pair of mask borders each being fixed to a respective support blade and a plurality of strands extending between the mask borders. The mask further comprises cross wires extending generally perpendicular to the strands on a screen facing side and at least one shield assembly extending between and attached to the mask borders. The shield assembly has a sheath extending along one side of the mask in contact with at least one strand and a shield attached to the cross wires of the mask in overlapping relation to the sheath.

Cathode-ray tube having a tension mask with microphonics control

An apparatus and method for terminating crosswires on a tension focus mask. The apparatus includes a set of base segment side rails each having a length and two respective ends. A pair of square tubes attached perpendicular to the respective ends of said base segment side rails to substantially form a rectangle. Also included are a pair of massive side rails having a length and two respective ends mounted above said base segments perpendicularly to said square tubes on each of the side rapid. Beam shield is offered to the massive side rail and insulating members are sandwiched between the side rail and a bus bar. Finally, a tension mask is attached and crosswires are laid and affixed to the bus bar.

Rigid busbar for a cathode-ray tube (CRT)

A color cathode-ray tube has an evacuated envelope with an electron gun therein for generating an electron beam. The envelope further includes a faceplate panel having a luminescent screen with phosphor elements on an interior surface thereof. A focus mask, having a plurality of spaced-apart first conductive strands, is located adjacent to an effective picture area of the screen. The spacing between the first conductive strands defines a plurality of apertures substantially parallel to the phosphor elements on the screen. Each of the first conductive strands has a substantially continuous insulating material layer formed on a screen-facing side thereof. A plurality of second conductive wires are oriented substantially perpendicular to the plurality of first conductive strands and are bonded thereto by the insulating material layer. The insulating material layer is partially or slightly conductive to an extent sufficient to prevent an accumulation of a significant electrical charge.

Cathode-ray tube having a focus mask using partially conductive insulators

A tension mask frame assembly for a color cathode-ray-tube including a frame having four respective sides, two of the sides paralleling each other and having insert receiving brackets for supporting strand termination inserts therein and vertical mask strands welded to said termination inserts. The strands have a plurality of cross-wires extending perpendicular to the strands and attached thereto by a conductive bonding material. The wires and termination inserts are composed of materials having a first coefficient of thermal expansion. The frame and receiving brackets are composed of materials having a second coefficient of thermal expansion. The termination inserts thermally expand and contract independently of the frame and receiving brackets, whereby movement of the strands in the horizontal dimension is controlled by thermal expansion and contraction of the termination inserts and cross-wires.

Tension mask frame assembly for a CRT

A color picture tube has a tensioned mask supported by a support frame mounted within said tube. The mask has a significantly lower coeffiecient of thermal expansion than the frame. Intermediary members are located between the mask and the frame. The intermediary members are of a material similar to that of the mask. Each of the members is attached to the frame at a single location and the mask is attached to edges of the intermediary members. Further included are guides for holding the intermediary members to the frame while permitting expansion of the frame relative to the intermediary members.

A light-absorbing matrix 23, having openings therein, is formed on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 of a cathode-ray tube 10 by providing a photoreceptor thereon, electrostatically charging the photoreceptor 72 to a substantially uniform level of charge, and exposing the photoreceptor to light through openings 33 in a color selection electrode 24 to selectively discharge the more intensely illuminated areas of the photoreceptor, without substantially discharging the less intensely illuminated areas. The photoreceptor 72 comprises a plurality of layers including a photoresist layer 56, a conductive layer 62, and a photoconductive layer 66. The openings 33 in the color selection electrode 24 have a dimension substantially greater than the dimension of the openings in the resultant matrix 23. The photoreceptor 72 is contacted with a liquid toner having charged pigment particles which form toner lines 84 on the less intensely illuminated areas of the photoreceptor. The photoreceptor 72 is exposed to UV radiation to selectively change the solubility of the photoresist portion 56 thereof into areas of greater and lesser solubility. The photoreceptor 72 is serially developed to expose portions of the interior surface of the panel 12, while leaving the areas of lesser solubility intact. Next, the interior surface of the panel and the areas of lesser solubility are coated with a matrix suspension which is dried to form the matrix 23. The areas of lesser solubility and the overlying light-absorbing matrix material thereon are removed, thereby forming in the matrix 23 a plurality of openings having a width less than the width of the openings 33 in the color selection electrode 24.

Method of manufacturing a matrix for a cathode-ray tube

A cathode ray tube may utilize a focus mask color-selection structure. The focus mask structure is susceptible to localized, transient short circuit events, or breakdown events. These events may be caused by conductive particulates that become free within the cathode ray tube and provide a short circuit between first and second layers of the focus mask. The breakdown events are undesirable because they may result in cross-strand currents causing mask strand magnetization that can interfere with a video image on the screen of the cathode ray tube. A transformer rapidly senses random changes in a voltage or a current supplied to the second layer of the focus mask. A pulse waveform generator is coupled to the transformer and provides a pulse waveform responsive to the sudden change in voltage or current.

Breakdown event detector

A cathode ray tube may utilize a focus mask color-selection structure. The focus mask structure is susceptible to localized, transient short circuit events, or breakdown events. These events may be caused by conductive particulates that become free within the cathode ray tube and provide a short circuit between first and second layers of the focus mask. The breakdown events are undesirable because they may result in cross-strand currents causing mask strand magnetization that can interfere with a video image on the screen of the cathode ray tube. A rapid degaussing operation is initiated during the next subsequent vertical blanking period following detection of the breakdown event.

The envelope further includes a faceplate panel 12 having a luminescent screen 22 with phosphor lines on an interior surface thereof. A uniaxial tension focus mask 25, having a plurality of spaced-apart first metal strands 40, is located adjacent to an effective picture area of the screen 22. The spacing between the first metal strands 40 defines a plurality of slots 42 substantially parallel to the phosphor lines of the screen. A plurality of second metal strands 60 are oriented substantially perpendicular to the first metal strands 40 and are insulated therefrom across the effective picture area by insulators 62. The second metal strands 60 are attached by a glass conductor layer 68 to respective right and left first metal end strands 140 outside the effective picture area to form busbars.

A color cathode-ray tube 10 has an evacuated envelope 11 with an electron gun 26 therein for generating at least one electron beam 28. The envelope further includes a faceplate panel 12 having a luminescent screen 22 with phosphor lines on an interior surface thereof. A uniaxial tension focus mask 25, having a plurality of spaced-apart first metal strands 40, is located adjacent to an effective picture area of the screen 22. The spacing between the first metal strands 40 defines a plurality of slots 42 substantially parallel to the phosphor lines of the screen. Each of the first metal strands 40, across the effective picture area of the screen, has a substantially continuous first insulator layer 64 on a screen-facing side thereof. A second insulator layer 66 overlies the first insulator layer 64. A plurality of second metal strands 60 are oriented substantially perpendicular to the first metal strands 40 and are bonded thereto by the second insulator layer 66.

Uniaxial tension focus mask for color CRT and method of making same

The present invention provides a method of making a tensioned focus mask. Such a mask includes a set of parallel strands and a set of parallel wires that are perpendicular to the strands and separated from the strands by insulator means. The method includes attaching the strands to a mask frame and then coating the strands with a first insulator. The first insulator is then cured, and a second insulator is applied to the first insulator. Next, wires are wound over and in contact with the second insulator, by rotating the mask frame and by drawing a continuous wire from a source through a tensioner, while guiding the continuous wire into desired positions overlying the strands. Finally, the second insulator is heated until the wires attach to the second insulator.

Method of making a tensioned focus mask

The present invention provides an improvement in a color picture tube having a tensioned mask and support frame assembly. Each of the mask and the support frame is rectangular and has two long sides that parallel a central major axis thereof and two short sides that parallel a central minor axis thereof. The mask has a substantially cylindrical contour, being curved along the major axis and straight along the minor axis. The improvement comprises the frame including two first members that parallel the major axis and two second members, attached to the ends of the first members, that parallel the minor axis. Each of the first members includes a rigid section and a compliant section cantilevered from the rigid section. The mask is attached to the distal ends of the cantilevered compliant sections.

The present invention relates to a method for pre-stressing the CRT tension mask 24 to induce creep. The method includes the steps of applying a suitable force to the mask material to induce stress therein, heating the mask material to an ultimate temperature, for a sufficient time, while under stress, to induce creep, and cooling the material.

The invention is an improved arrangement for illuminating a liquid crystal cell which provides a significant increase in the range of viewing angles in a plane orthogonal to the principal viewing plane which is defined as the plane containing the director at the midpoint of the liquid crystal and the normal to the light entry surface. The improvement comprises means for illuminating the cell having a substantially collimated beam in the orthogonal plane. Preferably, the thickness of the liquid crystal in the cell corresponds to the first Gooch-Tarry minimum. The invention is also a method for providing a wide angle for a liquid crystal display comprising the step of illuminating a liquid crystal cell with a beam of light which is substantially collimated in the principal viewing plane and which is substantially uncollimated in an orthogonal plane.

Illumination of a liquid crystal display

A light box comprises a source of light, a reflector and a Fresnel lens. The lens provides nearly constant illumination of an object such as a liquid crystal cell by collimating light parallel to a normal to the cell. Thus the cell will exhibit a nearly uniform electro-optical response. The reflector preferably is parabolic, while the light source preferably is a line source such as a fluorescent tube.
