A computing device selects a sample of data values from an existing data column in a data source. The device generates statistics describing occurrence of consistent delimiters within the sample of data values. The device identifies a first delimiting location within the sample of data values in accordance with the generated statistics. It also creates first and second new data values by splitting each data value in the existing data column at the first identified delimiting location. It stores the first and second new data values in first and second new data columns, respectively, and assigns field names to the first and second new data columns. The device further displays, in a data visualization user interface, the assigned field names and a data visualization generated according to the first new data values based on user selection of the assigned field name of the first new data column.

Systems and methods for preparing raw data for use in data visualizations

A database engine receives a database query that specifies retrieving data from a data source. The database engine parses the query to build an operator tree that includes a TableScan operator configured to scan a table from the data source to produce outputs corresponding to a single data field from the table, and includes a GroupBy operator that groups rows of the table according to the data field. The database engine generates and executes code corresponding to the operator tree to retrieve a result set. When the TableScan operator is a child of the GroupBy operator and the outputs are independent of duplicate input rows from the table, execution of the TableScan operator comprises, for each storage block of rows from the table: determining a storage compression scheme for encoding the data field and, for certain encodings, using the encoding to produce the outputs without duplication of rows.

Optimizing domain queries for relational databases

Systems and methods for preparing raw data for use in data visualizations are described herein. A method includes selecting a sample of data values from an existing data column in a data source, identifying a first delimiting location within the sample, creating first and second new data values by splitting each data value in the existing data column at the first identified delimiting location, storing the first and second new data values in first and second new data columns, respectively, and assigning field names to the first and second new data columns. The method also includes displaying a schema information region, which includes the assigned field names, in a data visualization user interface. The method displays a data visualization that includes first and/or second new data values based on user selection of the assigned field names of the first or second new data columns.

A method and system for mitigating and compensating for loss of digital audio data transmitted as a stream of packets to a client (30). A server (10) compresses digital audio data corresponding to a digitized analog audio signal. The compressed data are divided into N frames of data per packet. The server interleaves the frames, producing interleave packets of up to order N. The interleave operation minimizes the effect of any lost packet when the interleave packets are received, deinterleaved, and converted to an analog signal that is played on a speaker at the client. Lost frames are replaced using the data from frames that are received. As a further aspect, the frames can be scrambled at the server by applying a permutation function F that depends upon the packet number (PN) and a Key value. At the client, an inverse permutation function F.sup.-1 is applied to unscramble the frames.

Error mitigation and correction in the delivery of on demand audio

A random access animation user interface environment referred to as interFACE enabling a user to create and control animated lip-synchronized images or objects utilizing a personal computer for use in the users programs and products. A real-time random-access interface driver (RAVE) together with a descriptive authoring language (RAVEL) is used to provide synthesized actors ('synactors'). The synactors may represent real or imaginary persons or animated characters, objects or scenes. The synactors may be created and programmed to perform actions including speech which are not sequentially pre-stored records of previously enacted events. Furthermore, animation and sound synchronization may be produced automatically and in real-time. Sounds and visual images of a real or imaginary person or animated character associated with those sounds are input to a system and may be decomposed into constituent parts to produce fragmentary images and sounds. A set of characteristics is utilized to define a digital model of the motions and sounds of a particular synactor. The general purpose system is provided for random access and display of synactor images on a frame-by-frame basis, which is organized and synchronized with sound. Both synthetic speech and digitized recording may provide the speech for synactors.

Advanced tools for speech synchronized animation

A voice animation system decomposes pre-recorded samples of actual speech into basic segments to derive speech patterns of a particular speaker to provide parameters and coefficients for use in a text-to-speech synthesizer to artificially synthesize human quality speech with unlimited vocabulary in the voice of the person who provided the pre-recorded samples. The pre-recorded speech samples are further processed to add desired inflection and other auditory effects to create high-quality animated or artificial voices.
